Ok guys i got my own muffler question that wasnt answered in any of the other posts, I have a very healthy 351w with a nice lopey cam in it, i currently have the tubular automotive headers and a 2' chunk of 2.5" exaust pipe and some v-force mufflers ending right before the axle. Before you guys flame me on my crappy exhaust. I am getting ready to have a new system installed, 2.5" may be a little much, im not sure if i can get away with something smaller or not, or if i even need to go smaller, all i am wanting for my end result is a very deep throaty tone, interior noise is not a worry, it is only a cruiser not a daily driver, i just want something that rattles the cars floorboards next to me at the stop lights. btw i have dual 3" flowmaster exhaust on my smallblock chevy truck and i was looking for something a little deeper than that. So lets here your suggustions guys, Thanks Justin
Certainly no smaller than 2-1/2". Personally, I'd go with 2 chamber Blow Blasters (Flow Masters) and run them all the way (straight) out the back. Maybe have the Mustang Fox Body 2-1/2" chrome tips. Again, a personal thing.
Hell just put on a set of cherry bomb header mufflers, Better yet just bolt on a set of purple hornies.
If you want it to reverberate through the floorboards you have to dump it under the car - or don't use isolators when you hang your exhaust. Using 2 1/2" pipes is ok. Don't go smaller and three inch pipes is not necessary. To get it to resonate more you can put an extractor cone on it after the mufflers. The "standard" cones are 2' long and expand to twice the AREA of your pipe. The 2 1/2" pipe has an area of 4.9sq" and to get 9.8sq" you need a pipe diameter of 2 7/8". To make the cones (one for each side) get some 2 7/8" ID pipe 25" long and in four places (at 90 degrees) around the big pipe mark down 1" from the end of the pipe. From there make a triangle that has one point at the point marked and the other two points 1" from the other end and 1/4" - 3/8" apart. Cut the pipe straight from the 1/4" side of the triangle to the closest end and cut the two lines of the triangle that go to the first mark at the other end. You will close the gaps and weld the tube together giving you a nearly perfect extractor cone. You may have to use a little heat to get the cuts together. You may have to use a pipe expander to get the small end to fit over the 2 1/2" pipe from your muffler. These will amplify the sound from your muffler but also act to extract (suck) the exhaust from your engine. Dumping them right infront of the rear axle will make the guys with the big bass speakers jealous - BIG sound but deep in tone. The HP increase you get is icing on the cake.
although it is just a cruiser i dont really want to smell exhaust, i guess ill just go with some sort of a flowmaster, i hear the guy here in town lets you hear it before he welds them up
