hi i was just wondering what size rear end came with 72 mav with a 302 and what gears did it have? thanks
It came with an 8" from the factory. As far as the gears go, the ratio could be one of many. The best place to look is on the front of the pumkin you will find a tag attachet to one of the mounting bolts. Clean it off and there will be some numbers on it. Look on the lower left corner of the tag and there will be a set of numbers that look something like 3.00 or 3L00. Could be any number of combinations of numbers. The numbers are your gear ratio, as above they would be 3.00:1. The . means that it is an open rear end and the L means that it has a limited slip of more commenly called a Positrack but you dont see many of those in a stock configuration Maverick/Comet. Then after the gear ratio you will find another number such as an 8 or 9. That is your ring gear size size in the housing. Attached is a picture of the tag. The gear ratio is a 2.83:1 open rear diff and a 7.2" ring gear out of a 1969 1/2 Maverick. I hope thid helps to ID your rear end. Don
Look at the tag inside the door jam. What letter is under "Trans."? a 3 there = 2.79:1. A 6 there is 3.00:1. Your car most likely has one of these two ratios, most Mavericks did.
