I would do a single Holset HE351CW (comes on '04-later dodge pickups 5.9 cummins...automatic trans only) which will flow enough air to support 450+ HP...fits great, cheap, and easy to find. Most of the Dodge guys throw them away in favor of the HX40 or HX35. I ran one on a 2.3 a few years ago. Worked great. I find them on ebay quite often for less than $200. Boost? How much do you want? They'll support 40+ psi and flow around 42 lb/hr of air, IIRC. I ran mine at "only" 18 psi. If I had another Maverick, I'd consider a 250-six with a single Holset long before I considered a blower of any sort (centrifugal, screw, or roots type). Blowers are nice and will make a ton of power...but the power band is for the most part "linear". The turbos are just SOOO much more fun to drive. That "hit" of power is just cool.
Hey mavman, What would you suggest buying in addition to that turbo if I wanted to do a compound turbo setup?
i have seen amazing things with a twin turbo supra.. a twin turbo i-6 maverick would be the ultimate sleeper.. hey, what ya got in that thing.. ehh... just a straight six.. nothing special.. wanna run.. sure.. next light HOLY CRAP.. what is in that thing.. classic
Simon, that describes my old SVO perfectly. I shared a story similar to that on the off topic board a while back. Guy in a firebird "wanted some" to the next stop light, so I gave him a can of whoopin. I pulled into the next gas station and he comes in & asks what I've done to the 302 to make it run that good. My first response was "it's a 4 cylinder"....and he thought I was crazy until I raised the hood & showed him. The facial expression was priceless! As far as what turbos to use for compounds, I don't have any experience with compound turbos so I couldnt' say. You're better off calling someone like master power, innovative, Turbonetics, or someone else in the know. I have only done single & traditional setups. The only thing I have seen with compounds is that they're used mostly for extremely high boost levels on diesel engines (above 50 psi) for pullers and diesel hotrods. The new 6.4 PSD is somewhat of a compound turbo.
