Like someone else said. If you can get a set of GT40 heads and a dual plane 4 bbl intake with carb for real cheap, then roll with that. It's a good place to start. If you know someone that can do a quick and dirty pocket port and match the intake to the heads, the that'll wake up those heads some more. All of that can be found in salvage yards. It doesn't happen very often, but we even found an edelbrock intake one time. Also check out the swap meets and car shows. You can get some pretty cheap stuff there too. Try to go to as many of those as you can this summer. When you get ready to put your heads together, go down to NAPA or Carquest (I doubt autozone has any) and get some valve spring shims. Put an .050 shim under each spring and it should help out those tired old springs. Then lap the valves to the seats so they'll actually seal. You'll also want to clean off all the carbon and put on new seals. Seals aren't too expensive. I found out that if you soak the valves in degreaser or brake cleaner over night and then use a 3M pad they clean up pretty good. Just try to stay away from the seat surface as much as you can. Heads and cam are the biggest contributors to going fast. Intakes help too and obviously you need a big enough carb, but you'll get the biggest improvements from heads and cams. The first 5.0L I ever had ran a stellar 16.4 or something like that the first time out. Not so good. I was a junior in high school too. After my first head cam intake swap (in college) I got down in the mid 14s, and the transmission gave up the ghost. A new tranny, some deeper gears, LCAS, some porting and matching got me a 13.7 at 105. I don't think the converter or that transmission were every quite right. The next step for me was some bigger heads or at least a solid roller cam, but I never got around to that. I ended up selling that car and using the money to buy my maverick and the mod motor. Just remember that getting there is half the fun.
Please enlighten the rest of us as to why a nitrous system cannot be used with a 2 bbl carb? A properly installed system appropriate for a given application is harmless to an engine. Not every nitrous system requires a "race-built" motor, that is why I suggested the Powershot kit. People use nitrous on otherwise stock engines all the time. Do you know that it is possible for an improperly tuned carburetor to melt pistons just as well as an improperly installed nitrous system? Of course you do.
Now see, Fred? Wasn't that easy? Where in my above post did I say that N2O "cannot be used with a 2bbl carb"?? I never said it was not possible, I said it is not his 'best bet', and that it could damage his engine. Most of the other replies here suggested the same upgrades that I did, and I am sticking by that answer. And yeah, I am fully aware that a carb that is too lean can melt pistons at high RPM, but it's not at all likely in this case. I doubt that a newly-installed 4-barrel carb on his engine is gonna have such a problem. You need to stop thinking that you are "all that" just because you have a kick-a$$ engine in your Maverick. It doesn't make you better than me or anyone else. I am not impressed by your superiority complex. You're still butt-hurt about me stating an opinion here many months ago about header primary tube sizes. It amazes me that someone would feel the need to become so hostile toward me just because I have a differing opinion about something than they do. My statement (about headers), when taken in it's proper context, was indeed accurate, as MOST people aren't running trick heads like yours. I suggest you take a valium and relax. We can be enemies if you insist, but I personally feel that it is unnecessary...
if you just want faster 1/4 time rear gears would be the most bang for the buck ...like 3.55s - 3.80s just my
yeah thanks guys, i found some heads for 275 an MSD ignition for IDUKNOW, and i need an intake and carb, thank god i got buddies that work at oriellys
I like the way you think, and i want that whinning sound when i get on the gas, wanna donate one. on headers, i see that everybody recomends the Hooker 6109's and i was wondering if some headers off of a 302 foxbody would work?
most likey wont fit being 1 7/8 s i have a 1 3/4 on a 351W and its friggin tight Hooker 6901 will do the trick Plus 1 7/8 is HUGE really to big for a stock engine 1 7/8 is good if your running 600-700+hp
At least you and I can sleep soundly at night knowing Fred will be in our dreams with his unlimited knowledge and wisdom. I've heard he's a really good guy, once you get to know him.
open them E7 heads up, they respond well to gasket matching, and polish the rough casting out of the inside of the intake
The guy only wants 40 bucks, so they may need some work, if they do, what should i do to them? Polish, port, new rockers and springs, valves?
