how far can you noch the towers for clearance without hitting the front springs? i dont want to dent them in.i want to cut them out like this.
I don't have a definitive answer, but I'd guess you could cut straight down then start trimming the cut outward until your a safe distance (1"?) away from the spring (assuming they're on the car). I'd definitely put a Monte Carlo brace across the towers afterwards. Scooper cut his back at a pretty severe angle (relatively speaking).
I went a little further than most, and still had another 1/2" to 3/4" before I got in the way of springs, but chickened out afraid that the towers would lose their strength and cave in on me. Here is the thread that I discussed what I was doing as I was doing it...http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=18193&highlight=shock+tower+cut It is long, the brief version is on page 5 of that thread. Plus details on my website...http://home.cmaaccess.com/~scodon/september2005.htm This is what I ended up with... There is still plenty of room to cut, but I stayed a bit conservative. Click on the next month on my website for the finishing touches.
Hey, that's my ugly engine compartment! That's why I didn't want to open the hood at Roundup, someone might take a picture that I would see later! That will look a lot better this summer when we swap motors and detail it.
CometGT, are you still running stock suspension? I knew more could come out, I just wanted to keep some strength in the towers so I wouldn't have to get it re-alligned every two weeks... By the way, that is an interesting way to "notch" them...
Yep, that's the notching kit from Revolution Racing Suspension......I'll be running a coil-over setup. NO MORE UPPER CONTROL ARMS!!!!!!!
I've never measured with a ruler or tape measure but I cannot put a finger between the spring and the new shock tower "wall". I can tell you that the spring does not hit, however.
sweet if i can run stock with no problems than im goin with the revalution racing 67-70 mustang plates.im still running a 302 but i want clearance to work with.O AND IM SORRY FOR POSTING A PIC OF YOURE UGLY ENGINE BAY MAVERICKDVM AT LEAST IT LOOKS BETTER THAN MINE! WHICH SEAS ALOT! MINS STILL A DIRT BALL WITH A 6 IN IT!
YOU CAN NOT RUN A STOCK SUSPENSION WITH THE REVOLUTION RACING SHOCK TOWER NOTCHING KIT. You must run a "true" coil-over strut conversion kit which eleminates the upper control arm. This basically makes the Comet/Maverick front suspension similar to a Fox body mustang that has a common, coil-over conversion kit installed.
