Rust prevention in the north. In the great white north, it is common to have your car undercoated with heavy oil. The question I have is this... 1 . Is this bad for the inside of the doors and other inclosed areas that might or might not contain bondo? 2. Someone told be to put oily rags in the inside of my doors and quarters. Is this a good thing? I guess they drill small holes in the doors and other hard to reach places and stick a long spray tube inside these areas and "let her rip". I have considered having this done and wanted some opionions. Thanks, Mark Rust prevention in the north.
They do it here in Finland too. You could use some sticky oil. But no oily rags or used motoroil. Important is to make sure all vater evacuation holes are open. But better is to use some fairly oily rustprevention, like Dinitrol ML or waxoil (or something like that). And on undersurfaces some thicker tar-like coating that won´t wear so quickly.
Dont use used motor oil or any rags. Im not crazy about drilling holes, as the holes can rust if not properly capped. The place that shot my car took off the interior pannels to shoot the car with grease.
Thanks Stefan! The guy that was going to do it was going to use a Chain saw "bar and chain" oil. It's a heavy, new, thick and sticky unused oil. any advise is welcome! Thanks!
Hmmmm? Could it be a back woods country thing? I just don't want to do anything thats going to screw up my car! Maybe were breaking new ground here!? Or making a hell of a mess! What do ya think?
I would never put oil or grease on my car except for the designated areas, engine/ball joints etc..!! I have one and only one suggestion for people that want to prevent rust on there vehicles....... POR-15 In my opinion it is the best rust prevention on the market today!!! I have used alot of this stuff on my car and the other day I tested one of there claims. POR-15 claims that it's tough as nails and it won't chip or peel even if struck with a hammer. So, I grabbed my hammer out of the tool box and started beating on one of my subframe connectors, not softly either......it didn't even scratch it..... http://www.por15.com/
What????????? My brother, a fireman, laughed like hell when I mentioned this post to him. Oily rags have a history of self-igniting and starting fires. It is usually in a garage where they are piled together, but it happens. I know motor parts are sprayed in grease to prevent rust, but I agree with Stephen, there are other products out there. Seth
I asked about this at the car plant here, and one of the older engineers said they used to use something like cosmoline (used in gun barrels) to stop rust in the older cars, ours included. Don't know how much good it did....evidently not too good!!! I agree with the others, Mark, oily rags and loose oil is inviting a problem, and if nothing else, a pain to keep clean and work on your car. BTW, be at the yard Sunday...come on down! Earl
i do as of now I have an undercoating on the comet.....a mixture of power steering fluid-used engine oil-rear end lube-transmis.....oh, fixed that one......... Robert :bananaman
Ya, The oily rags stuffed in a doors and quarters are a fire hazard! Thats a "no-brainer"! Now I feel stupid... Some old dude told me about the rag deal. Not to worry, I have not done this to my Mav and never will! This is what makes this board so valuable! Being able to get help and advise for rookies like me! Thanks guys! Ps: My Econoline E-150 has a self undercoating system, It's called the rear main seal!
While I dont think stuffing oily rags in any confined area is a good idea, I dont see how this is a fire hazzard. The combustion temperature of oil is well above 400 degrees. It would take a bodacious pile of rags to generate that much heat.
