Summit box just came in. It does have the "prongs" like in Ricks picture above. It also came with a pigtail to use in case "the volt meter does not register on initial start-up" whatever that means! I t says I can wire the other end to the indicator lamp also. I don't think I will as I am doing this to eliminate wires..
What part number or brand did you buy from Summit? I have been debating on buying the Summit Racing Brand 100 Amp Alternator for my Maverick. I am tired of my 60 Amp not charging my battery.
I have a 'one wire GM' that has the battery going to the back post like in the pic. However, it has the blades too. They are just covered with a black plastic plug. Makes it look flat on the outside, but is obviously removeable to expose the blades. I have done it.
The black plastic cover is what makes it work as a one wire unit. It actually makes it excite the internal regulator to start it charging. If you take the plug out, I don't believe it will charge at all. This type of alternator setup actually has to have a small amount of rpm (probably 1500 or so) to get it started charging. If you start your engine and never race it up over idle, they will not charge at all. That's the way all of the old GM 1-wire marine alternators were made...and this is the same alternator that has been used for over 25 years or so.
Evidently so...the old marine alternators simply had a metal connector that just slipped over the 2 blades. The 2 blades are coming straight out of the internal regulator.
Sorry, I didn't mean that it has to remain running that fast to keep charging. It only has to rev up one time to excite the regulator and it will remain charging until the engine is shut off.
