The starter problem is fixed, bad starter, bought a new one at Kragen, but now, the engine will not turn over, when the starter engages, the engine shutters, and the starter will continue to try and turn it, but the engine will not budge, and more than that, the wire running to the starter heated up and burnt off the outer plastic... What would keep an engine from turning?
Took out the plugs and tried to turn it by putting a socket on the crank bolt, and cranking it with a 6ft breaker bar, and proceeded to shear an extension, with little to no progress... What would cause an engine not to turn?
when was the last time it was turning over? was it turning over with the old starter? if so remove the new starter and try to turn over by hand. the new starter may be binding the flywheel.
It's an i-6 to v-8 swap, the engine is freshly rebuilt, so, not real sure when the last time it turned was, but during rebuild, checked spin multiple times.... Is there anything that could be causing it to bind?
i think if you put a socket on the crank and could not get it to turn at all you have a major problem. did it ever overheat or run out of oil. is there oil in it now? hard to figure out if it was running okay when it was parked. only time i had that happen was when i dropped a couple of valves. might take the valve cover off and see if all the valve train is okay. good luck.
E7te heads, hypereutectic (sp?) pistons, plugs are out, and a summit knock-off cam, compression should be right around 9:1...
No, didn't think to do that, why? would it possibly loosen it enough to turn it the right way? Is it just tight from the rebuild? thanks for the suggestions, I'll try turning it the other way, please, keep em' comin.
sounds like too tight or piston hitting a valve, or torque converter not seated all the way (or too long - not likely but can happen with a custom converter, ask how I know )
How would a torque converter not be seated all the way? How would I check, its an fmx, and it's not a new converter, there looks to be the recommended amount of play in the converer, and I wouldn't think the pistons would be hitting the valves, unless of course i completely fudged the cam timing, but I lined up the marks.... and the new pistons have DEEP valve reliefs, so I would have really fudged the timing... Too tight??? how do i fix that? Thanks a bunch guys.
Alright, went out, and tried to turn it the other way... It does! but it won't get past around 22 degrees btdc according to the balancer... Piston to valve interference??? I dunno, seems extremely odd.... thanks guys.
did it run at all since it was rebuilt? i've had the TC not seat and then not be able to turn the engine. luckily i tried turning the engine as i tightened the tranny up and found it before i installed it. the TC needs to go in 2 bumps. put it in then turn it. it'll bump in once, then turn it some more and it should bump in a second time. don't know if you can check this unless you pull the tranny. if it's not seated you definitely don't want to start the engine.
pull the ...inspection plate... on the transmittion. get someone to turn the motor (both ways) and you look in the hole and see what if anything is hitting. ...don't force it if it stops... also check the plugs..(are they ...long or short reach) ... ...
