I'm going to be replacing my fuel sending unit this weekend on my 72 Grabber and after looking at it I was wondering if I had to drop the tank? It looks as though because of the way it's positioned, I could just remove it and install the new one.

    Rock on,
    Josh

Two 1973 LDO Mavericks (one 4 Drag one 4 driving like Mad on the roads :) ) also have a 75 6cyl Stock! Ok, well sort of Stock :P
as long as its the one for the right year it should go right in.. no need to drop the tank... but i would make sure it has not fuel in it... it can be very messy... er don't forget to diconnect the battery too. ;)

Thanks. Yeah battery disconnect is a must! BTW maverickman, how are those carbon fiber grabber hoods coming along? I'll most likely be getting one of those bad boys when ready.

No need to drop the tank. Just run all but about 2 gallons of gasoline out of it and it won't make a mess. Replacement of the sender is easy. Make sure you replace the O-ring gasket as well...

Just jack it up on the drivers side rear (way up) and you can change it with over a half tank of gas.easy fix!

Yes, the metal O-Ring holding the unit in will twist out. I usually take a screwdriver and small hammer and tap on the tabs to get it to start. As stated above, make sure you get a new rubber o-ring seal. Be sure it seats in the right spot before tightening the metal ring back down or you will find a nice leak. This is a simple job but can be a pain in the butt if you don't pay close attention to reinstalling the unit.

I ordered the sending unit from auto krafters. I will have to check and see if it comes with a new o ring. Thanks guys.

    Later,
    Josh

Yes, it will come with a new one. I have gotten a couple of their units.

I smeared Vasoline on my O-Ring before installing it. It helps to hold the o-ring in place while you put the new sending unit in. I learned the hard way always order one or two extra o-rings. They are only a buck or so and if you damage the one that comes with the sending unit during installation you are not in trouble.
    Good luck
