no room on this forum with someone with attitude.. we already have enough of that going around.. lol just kidding.. yeah good luck on the motor... do you have an idea what you want to build?
Sure would like some of you guys to quit BSing and answer the damned question Thought I would throw out some more attitude, while myself, not contributing to the question...
Have had both in my drag car and thought both were good engines, all around. The block need's more clearancing with the 347 and is more work for the builder, but no big deal as far as longevity. My 331 was an Eagle flat top kit with I beam rod's and the 347 is H beam with Probe dome pistons @ 15:1 compression. Now that does make the difference between the two. For the money the 331 should do just fine in most cases. But "you" build what you want. I think you will enjoy either one and they both will pucker that b-hole shut when ya-ll mash it.
i AM building a 331. i just now picked up my block, and i have 1/2 the parts at my house waiting, and the rest on the way in the mail
the 347's when they first came out had ring problems. that has changed with the popularity of them. either motor will work fine and longevity should not be a problem. the bore is the same, only the stroke is different. i have an 87 roller motor that i am gonna build in the future for my sprint to drive on the street. that one will be a 331. i'm also thinking of building a 347 in the future for my strip only car. build whichever you feel better about.
I have heard they fixed the ring problem, but have also heard that it is an EXPENSIVE fix... Any feedback on that?
Even the cylinder wall side loading isn't an issue anymore with a 347, they offset the piston pin towards the center of the engine. The only thing nonconvential about the 347 (short rod) ring package is the metric size oil ring, but they come in sets and are readily available. The rod ratio is "worse" than a 331 but no worse than 2/3 of the factory engines ever built. If it means my 347 would "only" last 100,000 miles instead of a 110,000 miles like a 331 I'll still take the extra cubes.
Almost anything will take a dump when you put REAL stupid amounts of power to it, that it wasnt designed for. Making it a beast and still last is part of the fun
