Well, after spending all winter replacing the engine, rebuilt trans and installing a 3.00 posi, I finally was able to drive the Mav out of the garage. Also, thanks to Craig, overheating probs are history. All I wanted to do was drive it out of the garage so I could turn it around. At the bottom of the driveway, placed it in reverse and heard a pretty loud "clunk" and again every so often as I was turning the wheel. Didn't do it in drive as I drove it back in the garage though. Any suggestions? Don't want to stray to far from the house. Other than tha t it sounds pretty healthy. Thanks.
I'll bite. From what area of the car did this "clunk" take pace (front suspension, tranny area, rear-end area)? Were you driving the car when said "clunking" noise was heard while turning turning the wheel, or were you stopped?
I'll put it the best I can; motor running, placed it in reverse; loud clunk, then intermitant clunking while backing; placed it in drive-no clunk. Sounded like it came from the end of tranny rearward, somewhere in that area. Would the old driveshaft need to be re-balanced since I put in the posi rearend, I wouldn't think so.
Sounds like something in the rear gears or posi unit. Try jacking the car up and turn the rear wheels by hand both frontwards and backwards. Listen and feel for binding or noise.
I actually did this once I replace the 3rd member and prior to taking it down from the stands, no binding or noise then.
Do you have a solid spool? (which causes a bind and noise when turning). Other possibilities: Too much back-lash in gear setup ("clunk") Loose Tranny support Loose/broken motor supports or mounts U-Joint worn out I dunno. I'm outta guesses.
i would think either the u joint, front and rear.. or both.. or the tranny has slop in the reverse band.. try putting into 1st gear from park.. does it clunk as well.. what are the RPMS of the motor set to.. i know that if the rpms are high it will clunk into gear
Was the posi a new one or used? New (rebuilt) will sometimes "jump till the clutches seat. You may have to add another bottle of posi additive to gear oil. Need some more info.
Seller stated it came out of a Mustang 8" 3.00 gears. On my day off I'll be jacking it up again and checking the front u-joint. Rear was replaced when member installed. I understand when removing driveshafts to mark for proper replacement. If the 3rd member was replaced, how would I know it's bolting up properly? Hit & miss? In regards to the oil, I did fill it with limited slip type oil.
Was this picture taken when the car was on jackstands (suspension unloaded)? If so, I'd compare it to when the car is on the ground. Looks to be a little 'excessive' but my original DS extended about that far (per the Hotrod shop). I got an Aluminum one made to a custom length and took out all the slop). I also put the series 1350 yokes while I was at it. 'Might want to pull the DS and see if there are any markings on the teeth and/or spline.
well the yoke is shiny... that tells me that the car was jacked when he took the pic. seeing from where the shiny ends.. i saw that it goes in far enough but that wouldnt make it clunk.. if it was not engaging it would leak or it would not move at all
