Yea, I figured I didn't need to start a new one. Its a crime it took this long to get the suspention & engine done... I guess it will be another year before I can get the interior finished. Boy it sure don't seem this long or I'm getting older & things are taking a little longer to do...lol
This is beginning to be a f%*& headache. I called the local Ford dealership to get the bolt that bolt the bellhouse to the trans & bellhouse to the engine, they said they would have to order them & they were about $6 or $7 each. Then he tells me to check local parts store, no luck there. So then he gives me 2 metric sizes to look for. I got to a place that has bolt & screws. The come back with what the guy told me I needed. I wrote it down so I know this is what he said. Take them home & they don't fit at all. So I have called all over the city looking for these bolts & no one has them nor can they tell me the right size. Do anyone know what sizes I need? NAPA dont evan have them. I'm starting to stress....Cancel this request. I was right, they are not metric, they are 7/16 bolts.
Ok, first - Ford doesn't do swaps and the parts guy gave you the bolts for a late model fox car. You need bolts to fit your bell housing. The six bolts that hold the bell housing to the engine are 7/16" diameter bolts with 14 threads per inch. The length of the bolts is determined by the thickness of the metal they go through and how deep the hole is on the threaded side. If you have to go through a bell housing that is 1" thick and the hole in the block is 3/4" deep then you will take 2/3 of the 3/4" depth of threads and add it to the thickness of the bell housing. An example: 1 1/2" bell housing thickness for two holes 3/4" deep hole in block threaded for same hole in bell housing 2/3 x 3/4" = 6/12" = 1/2" 1/2" + 1 1/2" = 2" so you need 2 bolts that are 7/16" - 14 x 2" If you are going to use flat washers then add that thickness to the bolt length: 2" + 1/8" = 2 1/8" (most hardware stores only have lengths in 1/4" steps so: 2 1/8" going to the next size longer is 2 1/4" the bolt you would get is 7/16" - 14 x 2 1/4" You can get the bolts (grade 8) at a hardware store. The four bolts that hold your transmission in place are also 7/16" - 14 threads per inch. You can use the same formula as above. an estimate for the transmission to bell housing would be 7/16 - 14 x 1 1/2" with lock washers. For your engine to bell housing bolts if you measure the depth of your bell housing thickness for the bolt holes and add 3/4" to it you should be fine using flat washers (assuming aluminum bell housing).
Thanks PaulS...I went to a company that sells just bolt & screws. I might not have got enough of the 7/16x14x1 1/2 bolts but I got 6 of the 2 inch bolts. The also said might as well get the next grade up if I will be racing so I did. I have also cooled off a bit. Me being frustrated is not helping me any either. I just want to be rolling by the spring. The Power Tour will be stoping in Memphis the 2nd to the last stop before rolling on the Little Rock, Ar.
Next problem, flywheel bolts are to short. the new flywheel is 3 times thicker than the C4 stock flywheel. Will grade 8 bolts hold up or do they need to be harden like ARP bolts are? Stock bolts are .900 inches. ARP bolts are 1 inch. I need a bolt that is 1 1/4 inches.
Id buy new ones for that application thru summit. The profile(head) and harness of the bolts are quite specific to the application. Hardware store grade 8 wont cut it here.
Go with correct bolts. When I went from Auto to Stick I just bought the flywheel and clutch bolts from Jegs or Summit ... Most autoparts stores sell the flywheel bolts ... not sure about the clutch bolts though .. Also ... a T5 flywheel may need metric bolts ... not sure ...
I called NAPA & check for a Mustang 4 speed & the bolts are the same size. I called Kenny at 2nd Hand Power & he will have to do some checking for me. He did say that a Grade 8 bolt would be strong enough. Ratio411 how in the world do you know about that place? I guess that place it bigger than I thought.
I've known Kenny for many, many years. He bought the original 302/C4 out of my 75 when the engine went out in his black and orange van. Around 90-91... You ever see that van? He sold it a few years back, and says that 302 is still going strong. Was real mild. Performer, 260 Comp, roller tip rockers, etc... He knows me as Dave... I am from Pensacola, but I did live for many years in Memphis. Had a house on Egypt Central. Worked for Cor-Bits.
That's cool Dave. I got married in Florida. But then I had to come back home & start my life over with my better half...lol...but it was fun & very different for those 2 weeks.
I have found a guy in Coldwater, Ms that has a 73 Maverick, Couger, Mustang, Rancho, & other Ford parts. Is there any other car that I can get the peddles out of that will bolt right up? He know for sure that he has a couger that is a stick. The Maverick he wants $300 for but thats if he pulls the 351 out of it. 351 does not run, it needs rebuilding.
I have been trying to figure out how to mod the crossmember. Do the trans have to be sitting in a certain degree of pitch? It looks as if the middle of the crossmember is not down enough to allow the trans to sit level. Beside cutting the edges, what else has to be done to the crossmember?
