HEllo all New user to the site. was wondering if I could get some tips here. I'm trying to restore a 1963 Mercury comet, 4 door sedan. these cars usually come with the 140 CID or the 170 CID. I was told it was 170 and every thing has been all fine and dandy until I lately. The engine is stuttering while idle like it isn't getting enough gas and the Idle screw is all the way in. NOW I look at the engine and it says FORD L6 250 CID. Now I'm not complaining about having a larger engine, quite the contrary. but I'm confused because comets were never made with an L6 250. could this be a maverick engine swapped in? how can I tell where/what this engine is truly? I'm not much of a mechanic, I'm just getting started. anyone who could tell me where to find more info or give me more info would be fabulous. thanks in advance

alot of fords in the 1970's had 250's, not just the mavericks. it could have come from any number of diffrent cars. basically there all the same though. there were diffrent carbs avaliable and they use a diffrent water pump than the smaller cid I6's. the 250 will also have the starter mounted really low, just above the oil pan.

fordsix.com will be able to give you alot more info than here. this site is also dedicated to the 71-77 comets, the ones that look like mavericks so you probably wont be able to find much on a '63 model but your more than welcome to stick around

    good luck

Sounds like the idle /air screw was adjusted incorrectly. Try a turn and a half out to start. to clarify, im not talking about the throttle screw.

thank you guys a ton. It is a vacuum leak. I had a broken line that I couldn't immediately see. Even though this car isn't the body style you guys know and love, I might come here for any engine problems I have. It turns out this is an engine from an early 70's maverick that was swapped in, and you guys probably have untapped knowledge that I can use. Thanks again!
