The later 70s Duraspark system is a good setup and easy to fit into a points car. It is a magnetic trigger distributor and can trigger your MSD box directly, no stock box required. MSD distributors are copies of the Ford Durasparks, just much more expensive.

You can put in a Pertronics unit. You just have to use the front points location and remove both sets of points or replace the breaker plate with a single point plate. The rest of the distributor is the same.
Any distributor that replaces a single point distributor will replace the dual point distributor. What is your local shop talking about?

thanks for the replies, have not checked but like in a harley, two points might mean two "humps" on the shaft and maybe therefore suspicious dealers ( untrained), but if only one of the humps is in use, system should act as a single point ? right?

Dual point distributors used both sets of points to extend the dwell so the coil could get saturated at higher rpms. Dual point distributors were common in muscle cars before electronic ignitions.

Nice thread. Thanks to all who contributed here. I was really looking for a thread that discusses ignition issues and thinking that maybe I can get some info to help my neighbor fix her VW ignition coil. and glad I found this!:Handshake

On dual points if you use the msd box you do block off one set of points. Get a msd dist they plug into your box nicely and you can set the timing curve springs and total timing easier then a stock dist. Pertronics are junk unless they updated them I`m not sure and don`t want to find out had a bad exper with them. Get a msd coil when you get the box the blaster 2`s are nice coils
