well idk how it is on cars without a chip, bu on newer cars it ussually means dirty fuel clogged the sensor which would eventually lead to you needing to change your fuel filter etc, thats just my 2 cents, hope it helps somewhat

In no way shape or form will a clogged fuel filter effect your gauge. The gauge gets it's reading from a sending unit. The sending unit is a a variable resister. The resistance rises or falls just like the float attached to the sender. The BCM then sends a signal to the gauge or electronic meter. There's a tad more to it than that but that about sums it up,.....

when you say "doesn't work"...you get a "full" reading or "empty" reading all the time.

dirty fuel clogged the sensor :p, said it ussually leads to having to change the filter not that it caused it, as far as BCM goes i have no idea what youre talking bout there, so feel free to educate me

Mine quit working and it was the ground. Jump the 2 terminals on the plug at the sending unit and see (key on) if it works. Should go to full, if not then ground the gauge wire (try 'em both) and see if the gauge goes to full. If the gauge goes to full after jumping the 2 wires at terminal I'd say bad connection at sender or sender. If the gauge works only when using an alternate known ground then it's probably a ground issue. If the gauge still don't work then it could be a wiring issue or gauge. If you have access to an OHM meter you could check the readings at the gauge.

You said on newer cars. A BCM is a Body Control Module. A sub-computer on todays vehicles.

I still have yet to see any contamination of gasoline cause a fuel gauge to cease to function. I suppose if a pound of dirt found it's way in there but otherwisenot yet......
