I'm getting a 1972 maverick with the 302 as my first car. I'm really excited because I'm buying it from the original owner and its in great shape . its an absolute tank and i love it! but what i wanted to know is if anyone had any advice on anything that may like to go bad on the cars or that may need replaced at a certain mileage so i know of anything that might be heading my way. any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!
sounds like a great deal. one of the things to watch for is the cowl vent in front of the windshield. make sure you pour some water down and see if any comes out on the inside. that is the worst place on the maverick for rust. also check the torque boxes underneath. other than that the 302 is a great engine and with minimal care should keep running for a long time. i'd say check the brakes and shocks and stuff like that to keep it safe. good luck with it and post some pics when you get it.
Howdy an Welcome! I live in Springdale, Harmarville. Put the aol behind my user name an shoot me a email. Glad to help if I can!
I wouldn't call it a tank (neither huge nor heavy)...but it is built like a solid old car should be. Welcome to the board and post pics when you get it!
hello from Johnstown, if you are going to check brakes check wheel cyclinder and bearings also and above all (stay calm with yourself)
Welcome aboard the SS maverick Matey. Capt Mavowar says swab the deck argghhhh and please have your pet spayed or neutered
Welcome aboard...kinda like crack, very addictive, but has a MUCH better buzz (I guess, never tried crack, but i have been hooked on Mavs for 6 years now with no apparent ill effects ) What kinda miles does the engine have? Typical concerns are sagging rear springs (fix for $100), leaking transmission gaskets and seals (fix for <$25), the cowl unless you are lucky to buy a garage-kept car like me, maybe some blow by on the valve covers on a high mile engine. But, like they say above, that 302 is indestructible, and will run forever... Best thing is for a couple hundred bucks, you can make that 110hp engine put out 300hp
The Timing Chain/Cam Gear (plastic teeth) would be my only engine concern. I would THINK it has probably been relaced by now. But I get HAMMERED by someone whenever I Think
Hey Scooper, how do you fix sagging rears for $100? Re-arch? what kind of shop would I go to for that? Or is their another option?
How long you been going to PRP? Does your dad run up there? Was up last week, 2 years ago I had my Maverick running there. Should be soon I have new car running there. Good Luck an don't be afraid to holler.
welcome aboard. these cars are actually built rather well. not much to work on... of course when any vehicle hits 30, it might need a few things replaced here and there.. one good rule to go by "If it ain't broke, Don't fix it" however.. a good restoration can be healthy from time to time check the usual.. brakes, oil, steering linkages, etc
