Hey folks. I guess to start this off, i'll give you a bit of background. I found my 1972 2 door mercury comet gt in someones back yard. it has a 302 in it, runs ok. my first car was a 75 comet with an inline 6 in it. fell in love with comets. i currently roll in a festiva due to gas prices, but this will be my weekend warrior. I know what i'm doing with the body, this take a long time, but it will be amazing when its done. I noticed the biggest anyone puts in these is the 302. I'm wondering if i could somehow manage to squeeze in a 428 cobra jet. i found a crate engine that is exactly what i'm looking for at this link: http://chevystreetperformance.com/428_525HP_AAL.htm I plan on putting a different air filter on the motor though, most likely. I figure if i mounted the battery in the trunk, as well as shifted a few things around, i could make it work. maybe. Also, i know little about the tranny i need. as far as i know, to get the four on the floor, i need a top loader. the problem is, where can i get one, and will it fit. i'm also looking for a rear end that won't be damaged by this amount of torque, as well as if it even exists. I'm a farmer, i can make nearly anything work. however, i really want to do this right. Idea's greatly appreciated.
Oh by the way So i realize that you guys like pictures. I'm too poor to won a camera aat the moment, however, i found a picture of the model of my car, and this is about what i want it to look like when i'm done. However, i want a rear spoiler on it. This is another question. Anyone know where i can get one of those?? Thanks for input.
The big block will go in just fine, if you cut the front shock towers out and put in a Mustang II suspension or aftermarket rack and pinion setup... Go with a 9" rear to handle the power. Other than that, put LOTS of pictures up as you do this so we can watch the monster GROW
He means adding sub-frame connectors, whit that amount of torque/power you might twist the body a bit. http://mmb.maverick.to/search.php?searchid=461933 BTW: these guys have put engines way bigger than 302's
302 is a bolt in swap. lots of parts. can stroke to 347. lots of power. and not have all the weight gain of a big block. not to say it can't be done but the expense definitely outweighs the advantages in my opinion. good luck which ever way you go. let us know how it works out. p.s. not to be a smart-ass but if you can't afford a camera, how are you going to get a $12k engine. not to mention car, tranny, rear end and a bunch of other odds and ends. ????? might want to be a little more down to earth and work yur way up to it.
