OK, first off, I've done the searches, read the threads, etc. I still have questions. When putting an amp meter between the negative batter terminal and the cable there is a tremendous drain. It pegs the needle, I forget what that reading is.
There are two wires that attach to the batter side of the solenoid. One apparently powers the lights because none of them work when it is removed.
The power drain also disappears when it is removed.
My question is, are there any obvious places or problem spots in the lighting system that I should check first? If so, where and how.
Thanks guys, y'all are always a lot of help.
    Brad

Did that. It did not effect the drain.

All the lighting goes through the headlight switch. Work your way down the circuit and see when the drain goes away.
Disconnect the headlight switch and check
Disconnect the turn signal switch connector at the base of the column and check
Disconnect the high beam switch and check
Disconnect the voltage regulator and check
Disconnect the dome light switches and check
Then you will need to move to the exterior lighting.

I suspect the headlight switch itself.

The ammeter is NEVER connected to the negative battery terminal. That is where your drain is at. The ammeter connects the main accesory supply line with the battery POSITIVE cable. If you connected the ammeter from the main accesory supply line and battery negative you have shorted the ammeter.Get a new meter and connect it correctly.

I connected the meter between the negative post and its cable.

Thanks. So what do I have to do to get to the headlight switch? Pull the instrument panel?
