I am looking at a car via pictures only, th guy lives about 350 mi from me. he said the engine and trans has been rebuilt. Its a 72 Grabber. I kinda shying away because of the rust situation, and the fact that I cant see it in person. It was sideswiped in the drivers rear quarter. I know its hard to get a good "Feel" for a car via pictures, but do you think this is worth $1200?
I'd say it's worth $1200 only if he has about $3000 in the motor!! Looks like there's some pretty serious cancer in that passenger side kick panel, or whatever that area is called.....probably not worth $1200 in my opinion. Maybe $750 depending on what's been done to the motor.....
I wouldnt do it for that amount unless the motor is new and built (V8). You probably could part it out for that much depending on what it has that is good on it. If the motor tranny and everything else is good, you may want to get it and buy another car to transplant everything into the better body. You will save money in the long run. Rust can be very expensive to fix. I have seen better cars on ebay go for that much or less.....just depends on what your plans are. it is worth what ever you are willing to pay for it......
high seems pretty steep .. . ditto on the motor thought......... did he send engine shots? ..... Robert
oops, I didn't even see the picture of the driver side quarter....nevermind, I wouldn't give 750 for it......maybe he should pay you to take it.....
that car is only going to be worth whatever you are willing to pay for it.i see $500.00 tops and that is with proof that the motor has seen a rebuild.by the looks of that quarter the torque boxes are more than likely shot, but it depends how deep you want to get involved.there are a lot more nice mavs out there for around the same price range, give or take a couple hundred dollars.i would rather spend another $800.00 and get a nice $2.000 solid car, than spend $1.200,and end up putting at least another $1.500 into it.again it depends how much you are willing to pay and get involved.if you have the time and the funds go for it. good luck in whatever you decide...chuck.
Thanks Thanks all, you just confirmed my feelings on it. I will save what money I have and keep looking. Part of my problem is that there must be some kind of law around here where I live that states "no selling Mavericks within 500 miles of Glen's house" LOL Decent ones in my price range are hard to find in the midwest. Glen
I paid $1000 for my Comet, 302 auto 63,000 miles no rust or damage, good interior, all origional even the hubcaps. No I would not buy it. Maybe for $200-$300 if you needed the parts...or if it was a manual trans.
If it wasn't for the motor being rebuilt....it would be a $200 to $500 car tops. And either way...a parts car only. That thing is WAY to rough to restore. With all the rust one can see....imagine the rust you CAN'T see!! The Monte Carlo seats and all the bondo tells me this car has been "hacked" on...meaning lots of half-a$$ work on it. Run....don't walk...away from this one.
1200 beans  Pass. Tell him to keep the motor and give him a couple hundred buck for use as a parts car. The grabber parts look pretty decent as far as I can tell. I paid 150 for a pretty darn clean 73 (by midwest standards anyways), it had no motor but it was a v-8 car with a good c-4 tranny core and great floor pans and a straight body. So have faith that there is an undiscovered car out there for you somewhere with much better promise. I have heard plenty of stories about "rebuilt motors".
Re: Thanks Glen, I feel your pain, and know that Mavericks are a very rare sight in the IL area. I drive all over IL, MO and I know of 3 Mavericks that are sitting. If I see one on the road I nearly proclaim the day a holiday. I think Craig Selvey still has his yellow Maverick for sale. It is quite nice and would be great to use as is, or would make an awesome car to start a restomod on. Dan
Craigs Car I know, he offered it to me, but I am shy a few, bucks. Money is tight, as we just bought a house. if his is still available next year, and if I can save more moola, I will seriously consider it. And if you hear of any in the IL IA area let me know thanks again Glen
glen, if he is still asking that much he will still have it 10 years from now. that wouldn't make a good parts car. see if we can get a pic. of the motor. hang in there, look around the corner there is one out there for you. most of the time they find you...frank...:bananaman :bananaman L.T.N.G.
