ok so iv replaced teh fuel pump and teh control valve and for some reason it seems that its not getting enough gas to keep on or sumthin because when i start it it starts up then dies... it has gas and everything, but just dont know and im confused Anybody that can tell me what else it could be?
When you start the car, do you also push the gas pedal several times to keep it going? If it keeps running and wants to die, just keep giving it a little more gas. Sounds to me like you have a choke problem. Those straight 6s are indestructable, but the carbs are not the best. I've had 2 Mavs both with straight 6s and they both had a similar problem.
and if that doesn't work, try adjusting your idle screw. if you get it to idle, try adjusting the mixture.
yeah if i hit teh gas it just dies anyways and before if i did get it started, if i touched the gas pedal it would die...
sounds like a carb problem to me... If I remember right, I bought a rebuild kit for about $12-$15 and are available at any auto parts store (they may have to order, but you will get it). It was for a 200 rather than a 250, but I would think they'd be the same. Like I said, the rebuild kits are easy to install. They give you instructions and everything you need to properly adjust the floats, give you new parts for the accelerator pump, etc. My 200 had much the same problem and I put the rebuild kit in and it fired right up. Just needed some mixture adjustments. Now it runs like a champ (thanks to the tune ups)!
Just a thought, but would you happen to know which carb you have? It's either a Carter YF or Carter RBS. My 75 4-door had the Carter YF.
You should check to see if you are getting voltage at the coil with the ignition in the "ON" position. Fords use a secondary wire connected to the solenoid to supply twelve volts to the coil when cranking. As soon as you stop cranking the power comes from the resistor wire from the switch. I bet you are not getting power to the coil from the ignition switch. It starts because of the secondary wire from the solenoid but doesn't get power to keep it running.
This is true, but it seems more of a carb problem to me b/c he says if he can get it running he gives it a little gas and it dies. Of course, I wouldn't rule that out. It's possible.
It dies whether he pushes on the gas or not - right after he releases the key from the start position it dies - Thats the way I read it.
Ok, I see. He stated, though, that before it wouldn't keep running he would push the gas a little and it would die. Maybe it's a combination of both? I'm not too familiar with coils. Also, that's a good question: How would you go about fixing that?
It can be tested by running a jumper wire to the + side of the coil from the battery - DON"T LEAVE IT ON THERE! It will burn the points and just cause more problems. But if it runs with the jumper wire then you just have to trace the wire that is on the + side of the coil and see where it is bad.
I'm with you Paul. It seems to me that he may have inadvertantly disconnected the "I" side of the starter solenoid. That was my first thought, but everyone was on the carb route so I didn't pipe in.
well i did buy a brand new starter solenoid and put everything on correctly as far as i know.. it would start but then once i hit teh gas it dies i will try that rebuild kit for teh carb and see what happens...
