Need help? I recently purchased a 9" Versales disk brake rearend and I need help identifing whether or not it is a posi unit or not and whether it is a 3:72 gear ratio as guy indicated that it was, Front gear unit has been removed from unit itself along with axles. Is there any special markings or numbers to identify it by. Thanks for any help that can be given. Allen Small:confused:
Look at the bolt heads that hold the ring gear on. If the heads of the bolts are recessed in a little cut out area, it is a track lock center section. If the area around the head is flat, it is non posi.
Divide the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion gear to get the ratio. Do a search for "9 inch ford" on Google. There's a lot of info out there on the 9 inch.
9" unit Not what I hoped for, OK guys I just went and checked the unit out closely. It does not look to be a posi unit the bolt area is as flat as a pancake. Checked the number teeth on the ring (37) and the number on the pinion (10), did the math and it shows that it is approx. 3:72 ratio which is what he said. Unit needs to be rebuilt which I knew of. What is a rearend like this worth? I know the unit can be made a posi by switching out the ring gear unit, but I had hoped I didn't have to do that. What are posi ring gear units going for these days? I want to thank you guys for your input. Allen Small
It takes... ...more than a ring gear swap to make it a posi rear end. Do as someone stated above and do a search on 9 inch rear ends. Just add to that positive or Trak-Lok and you will learn all about positive rears. I don't have a clue as to values. Seth
You can buy a new Ford Trac Lock carrier for about $260 from Jegs or Summit. Swaping it out is not that big of a deal. Richmond makes a video on setting up rears. Its worth the $20. Also available from Jegs and Summit.
video tape/gear setup Mavaholic, Thanks for the info, It will be very helpful. either way I go I am going to have to set up gears. Guy who had rearend had it disassembled to have sand/bead blasted to clean it. Whole unit need to be gone through. I feel I got a deal, but not sure. I guess how I feel is all that really counts. Maybe you can help me with a plan that I have. I have been told that in order to run the 8 x 15 Magnum 500s, which have a 4 1/2" backset, you have to run 1/4" to 1/2" spacer. My thoughts are the Versales rearend is approx. 1" wider overall than the Maverick 8" unit, this is what I have been told. I feel I might not have to run any spacer at all. Is the info I've been given correct, and am I correct in my thoughts about not having to run spacers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Allen small
I have also heard the Versallies rear is 1" wider. You will definately not need any spacers with them. I test fitted the wheels, 15X8 with 4 1/2 back spacing from my Sprint, on my stock 77. The tires just touched the leaf spring. So you should be right on the money.
