Actually, the Boss is only good for 363 cid (8.2 deck), according to the FRPP catalog. However, there are several other blocks (9.5 deck) that will work.

to be exact , you DONT have to touch the towers , this mod is done , for spark plug clearence and header bolt access...

A windsor WILL fit between the towers, but you will never change your plugs with out an engine removal!

id recommend shock tower mod to any mav/comet owner with a V8! , and its not butching! please ask rick book or scooper77515 they both and im sure many more , have did this mod , and they have 302 based engines.
id bet they dont mind changing plugs...

and yes as i said earlier , C will fit better than W , C heads point down , W points right on tower...

i love the idea of CHI (alum. C heads) on a big W , with an aftermarket block you can go all the way to 450CI maybe more , turbos, n2o and you got 2000hp

    What butchering????
    Goes in fine.
The tower shave (shave, not butcher) is used to make it easier to service the engine, not to help it fit.
Here is mine, no shave, no butcher... Uses all the 302 external parts...

    Back to the discussion:
I like the idea of a 408C for the 'wow' factor.
Then I also like the 393W for the 'cheap' factor.

Unless you pony up for aluminum heads, a properly built Cleveland will out power a Windsor.
