how do i fix this ? i just got my 4dr back from the guy i sold it to and he was not nice to my mav -theres a bad knock, exsaust leak, and oil leak, and the tranny has no reverse. i would like to keep the 250 for mpg sake and resto/hot rod the sprint plz help. t.u.v.m.
Ok, I will address the tranny first: Does it have all forward gears? If it has a good solid high gear then the fix is simple. The rear servo piston seal is blown. All you have to do to fix it is remove the rear servo cover, let the piston come out (there is a big spring behind it) and put a new piston in, a new seal ring on the cleaned cover, lube it, and install. You can tighten the rear band first to make sure the struts don't fall. Lubricate the seal on the cover and new piston with Vaseline. Adjust the bands (both are probably in need of it) The specs for a stock transmission without any shift kits is: 10 foot pounds of torque on the screw: front: back the screw out 1 1/2 turns and lock the nut down rear: back the screw out 3 turns and lock the nut down The engine is another deal altogether. Check the flex plate (the flywheel) to see if the torque converter nuts are loose or see if the plate is cracked. (if the knock goes away in gear at an idle then this is probably the knock. If the knock goes up and down with the engine rpm and it doesn't go away in gear at an idle then with the engine at a high idle pull the plug wires one at a time to find out if it is a rod knock. If pulling wires doesn't change it then it is probably a main bearing. Check your oil pressure with a gauge. If the oil pressure is low then you are going to have to pull the pan and look at how bad the crank is before you know if you can replace the bearings in the car or if the engine will have to be torn down to have the crank turned. Worst case is that you will need to rebuild the engine. If you have to do that then make it count. Add some compression with new pistons, a new RV cam and kit, have the intake manifold milled for a two barrel carb and put in a melling high volume oil pump. Your six will be a sleeper that will run like a stock 302. Put a transmission cooler on the tranny and add a TransGo 40-2 shift kit and your car will be a brand new experience. Find the exaust leak and fix it - that one is simple (not easy but simple) The oil leak can be a tough one. You need to locate exactly where the leak is coming from. Is it engine oil? Tranny? Locate the leak and you will know what to do to fix it.
after reading this i try'd the plug pull and it made a diff... but all of them did a little/ i think the exsaust leak is the donut / when i get the trany apart ill try what you said to do first and go from there/ oil leak is from every where valve cover front & rear main timing cover pan and it was all just done/ and now i think the carb is leaking to . my best friend wants the mav but i dont whant to get rid of it so im carging him rent(fix it) to use it good idea?
If he fixes it he can use it! If he has the ability and does good work this is a great deal! If you are going to get it back cobbled together this is not such a good deal!
