I have a 70 maverick .40 over 302 58cc jeg aluminumn heads voodo camshaft 523 int. 532 ex 268/276 dur roller rockers performer RPM intake and 2200 stall converter what would be a good start fo a carb I can,t seem to find one I started with a street avenger 670cfm then went to an eldeb. 600cfm then to a rebuilt 650 double pumper (not sure if it was any count).open for suggestions this is getting expensive
well the elde.600 good throttle response and launch but ETS are no good 8.44 1/8 74 mph just seems like it needed more umph.holley street avenger boggs bad on the line. 8.8 ET 1/8 84 MPH tried jets and some adjustments but no luck .double pumper idles good but popped and cracked under a heavy load (maybe power valve) tried jets but not sure which way to go.cam recomends a 700cfm carb
If it bogs real bad it most likely lean and i'd say it should be close as far as size. Did you adjust the accelerator pump? Squiter size? How much timing is in the engine? Whats the timing curve?
I have not tuned much on the carb just jets not real sure how to fine tune a holley or what is or what the side affects are of what needs adjusted.the timing is something I have played with I have an accel dist.with mechanical advance crane fireball ignition box it has been set at 4 degrees btdc then to about 8 degrees btdc at idle.and everywhere around that. could this be the ignition system going bad?
Not going bad just not tuned for your setup. A holley is a good carb unfortunately, their advantages of adjustability is also a drawback for a novice. I can get some pics for you if that would help out.
You don't mention what rear gears you have. Best thing you can do is buy a good book on tuning Holleys, about $20 at any book store. The Holley web site has an interactive feature that asks you questions about your car and helps you pick a carb.
