Well I finally found the engine for my car. A 351w (if you didn't notice from the title ) with the Edelbrock (this word alone may start a fight, imagine if said the new engine was gonna be a "C" word engine :16suspect) carb and performer intake. The engine was amazingly clean with slightly under 70,000 miles on it. The place I got it from is an all Ford yard that has some real clean engines in amazing shape already pulled and shelved and everything. The even washed the dust off of it and forklifted it into the truck. Plus it was only 450 bucks with all the accessories, after some talking. The only weird thing is when I was talking about the Mav everybody asked me if it was from/is in Venezuela? Weird? Anyhow, I do need all the swap stuff, would like to get it all from one person if possible. And one question are frame mounts welded on or bolted on? Will keep you guys posted.
The new engine is the 351W. I put the C word = chevy to clarify my first post were I put just the "C" word, and no meaning behind it, I was trying to hint at chevy without actually putting it in.
I've got the belly bar, motor mount stands, crossmember and throttle cable. I've got a set of power disk brakes if your interested also. Drop me a line if you're interested.
Oil pan must be the 351w car front sump, or aftermarket equivalent. 250 flywheel or flexplate won't work. The bellhousing will... Does the 351 have a flywheel or flexplate on it? The V8 belly bar adds to front end strength, but not having it will not keep you from swapping. The V8 throttle cable is shorter, but the I6 cable will work. The V8 tranny crossmember is double hump style, but that's the only difference. You MUST use V8 Maverick/Comet/Stang/and a few other 60s cars frame stands. Engine mounts are unique to Maverick and can still be bought new for cheap at the local parts stores. The I6 tranny is said to be weaker, but I don't know that for sure. Dave Edit: To answer your other question... Frame stands are bolted in. Also, 302s (from the 70s) use external parts that are directly compatable with 351s. Balancers, flexplate, flywheel, pulleys, starter, etc...
The transmission out of the six is not as strong - it has fewer plates in the clutches and lower line pressures than the C4 built for the V8. A street ready C4 build up (up to 400 hp) can be done by yourself. It will cost in the neighborhood of $200 to $400 to do it yourself or about $800 from a place like Broader Performance or Summit. You will have about the same transmission either way.
How hard is it to do, for someone that has no tranny exp.? I think i may stick it in like it is now, then when it breaks, just do an engine rebuild and tranny build and rear-end swap to posi. Thanks for prices and info though. Edit: Looks to be a flywheel, does that sound strange? And it's 28oz what I need to get correct? It's and 89 block, I'm pretty sure, but every oil pan on ebay says up to'87 for the 351. Is there any place to get a cheap flywheel for this engine? Edit once again: Would this work? http://autozone.com/R,APP237539/veh...partType,00119/shopping/partProductDetail.htm
If it's an 89 351w, then it probably came from a truck. If it did happen to be in a car, it was probably a double sump pan. You need to find a 69-78(or thereabouts) front sump car pan. The 351w retained a 28 oz balance to my knowledge. The link you give doesn't work. If it's for an auto tranny, then you need a flexplate, not flywheel. Dave
