I recently bought a 74 Comet and have never worked on a straight 6 250 engine before. I believe I found the dipstick for the tranny (in the back of the engine to the left) but when I ran the car to see how much fluid was there, it was bone dry. The dipstick seems quite short too... is 11" the correct length?

Also, how do I add tranny fluid to the tranny... basic question, I know... just never done it before!

    Thanks!

not sure of the length on a 250 but you add fluid through the same spot. use a funnel.:)

It would be WAYYY longer than 11". Probably closer to 26".

Your dipstick has either rusted off, been replaced with a short one or broken and is lying in the transmission pan. The dipstick should be the length of the dipstick tube plus about an inch and a half.

Well, I looked at the dipstick again and it is not rusted off or anything - has the reading meter on the end of it and looks in perfect condition. I don't suppose anyone esle with a '74 - 250 6cly. Comet could check the length on their tranny dipstick to see whether the one in the car I just bought is wrong.

    Thanks!

I don't have to look.....11" is too short.

Like Paul said....it should be just a little longer than your tube.

    Transmissin Dip stick

Talked to a guy at the Auto Shop. He mentioned that he had a 71 comet and that his tranny dipstick was the same length. I'm not questioning your knowledge... just making sure that it's not the original dipstick in my '74 as I cannot find any literature about it anywhere - which is why I am asking others if they could measure theirs... that way I can accurately locate the proper one.

    Thanks!

I know that they are longer than 11 inches. I 'welded' one in two when it fell on top of my battery once. The two pieces may have been close to 11 inches! Your best bet is to try the dealership to see if you can order a correct stick. Or, maybe a tranny shop.

    Good luck.

I don't have a 74 but I have a 72 and a couple of 73's. I could measure them - they are both case fill small bell trannys one is behind a 250 cu" and the other two are behind 302's.
Do you still need a measurement?
