I have the powertrax fully streetable locker it is for the ford 8 and 9 in. open with 28 spline axles.
The axles are the same as the one-legger rear-ends. I think Auburn Gear makes a Traction-Lok unit for the 8-inch...
I had a lock-rite locker in the 8 inch with the stock axles before changing to the 9 inch with a spool and 35 spline Moser axles.
There is plenty out there for the stock axles. I was leaning toward powertrax, but got cheap and went with a mini spool for $40, or maybe $60. I don't recommend that, save up the $350 and put in a "limited slip" locker.
Thanks guys How many splines is the stock axle? And is it worth upgrading if I'm just doing a mild build of a 302? Or will the stock axles be fine?
Actually I was just doing some calculating and it may seem like 4.10s would be too much. I need everyones opinion.. It would be like a 25in-26in tall tire with a c-4. With 4.10s it would spin at around 3,400rpms, seems a bit much
I would suggest something in the 3.90 range, it's a good street strip, stoplight to stoplight gear. The 28 spline axles (stock) are the same as the 9 inch 28 spline axles. Fine for a car that is mostly street. Save for some sort of posi or locker and the gears will make the most noticable change. Good luck!
^ Yeah thats the next big thing I'm getting I have 3.73s in my mustang so I wanted something bigger so maybe I'll try 3.93 or something
You don't have as many choices with an 8 inch vs 9 inch Typical ratios on new gears 3.00, 3.25, 3.40, 3.55, 3.80, 4.11, 4.62
If you are using a stock to mild cam, a set of 3.55 gears would be the ideal for the street. If you are going to use an AOD or a 5-speed, you can get away with 3.90 and lower gears. An AOD with a 4.11 gear would have a final drive ratio of around 2.85. That's having your quick performance and gas mileage, too.
Its going to be a c-4 for the time being. So.. I'll look around at my options, I guess it'll be between a 3.55 or 3.80
