Crazy story...need advice I know some of you guys know my story. If not go to this link http://www.maverick.to/mmb/showthread.php?t=24343&highlight=soupbone Anyway, My dad called me today and told me that he found a 1970-1972 Maverick 2 door. He's not sure of the shape it's in because there are wasps taking up residence in it. He's going by there today with some spray to see it up close. It does have a little surface rust that he can see but so far nothing looks major. All in all it looks like it might be a restorable car. The problem with it is that the car has been sitting around since Katrina hit because the owner took off and never showed back up (it sits on rental property). The crazy part to this story is that the owner of the house (not the car) wants to sell my Dad the car for the cool price of zero. The other crazy part is that this car is literally 1 block from my parents house. So here's the dilemma. We are not sure at this point how to get a title for the car. Since it's been abandoned for 2 years I'm assuming it shouldn't be too hard to get some sort of reconstructed title as long as we provide documentation from the owner of the house that it truely has been abandoned for 2 years. If not then we will probably part it out so you guys might be able to get some parts. I hope we are able to get the title because I would like to see my dad driving a car like his old one (even though it was a Comet). So what are your thoughts? Anyone deal with something like this before?
In Pa,, the owner of the land can claim storage of $20 a day which adds up to a zillion dollars, go to the notary and tell the story od storage charges and landowner will be able to sell the car with a title (clear) Check with your notary or AAA and see how your laws are! Be a good idea to compensate landowner for his troubles after you do the leg work! Good Luck
Cool...I will check into that and see. I'll give my dad a call in a few minutes. Thanks...I'll keep updating this story. It will be interesting to see how it all resolves. I'm not sure how Louisiana handles storage disputes but we'll see.
i bought my comet of the grandson of the original owner who was actually dead. needless to say it had no title. i had to get it checked out by the cop that it wasnt stolen and provide DMV with a noterized bill of sale. they try to contact previous owners to make sure the car sholdnt have really goen to someone else. after 3 weeks they couldnt get a hold of anyone and since the car was clean they cut me a new title for it. obviously its diffrent from state to state but i think it will still equal a PITA but for the right car its worth it. good luck
I am going through a title related nightmare of red tape for a Mustang GT I am trying to save from being raped to death by the parts man. It was left at a repairshop and fixed. The owner couldn't pay due to his being dead so it sat for 6 months and a family member came for it but by then the mechanic had filed a lien on it and it all went to court. Nobody can produce a title and the family gave up on it so here it is a year later and the repairshop closed down and moved several miles away. The Mustang sits in a fenced area behind the now abandoned shop as they tell me week after week that it will be another week or so before they "know anything". Built 5.0, 5 speed, notchback with Cobra wheels. Needs some work but they said I could finance it cheap "if we don't just part it out". Freakin people. All you really need is a police VIN check, cursory former owner search and a bill of sale here and a replacement title can be had. I did just that for a Valiant I had and it took about 3 months or so.
In Maryland the Land owner can file a "mechanics/storage" lien against the car and if the value adds up to more than the value of the car then he can sell/give it to you and with a properly notarized bill of sales, and a written statment saying that he has a lien on the vehicle the Motor Vehicle Admin. normally will reissue a title to the new owner after they do what they consider a reasonable background search.
Thanks for all the posts guys. My Dad should be over there right now looking at it and taking pictures. We are going to ask the property owner about the storage/lien idea since I think he legally owns the car now. I'll post the Vin and some pictures as soon as I het them.
Well guys here is the VIN F2K91F144268F. What can anyone tell me about this car besides it's ugly? Hey it was free so be gentle. At least it's a 5 lug.
Factory V-8 car. Built in Kansas City. Looks like it has a 1970 Grabber or 1972 Sprint grill in it (all black).
The "F" at either end is not part of the VIN. The first number in the VIN in a Maverick is always the year. This is a 1972.
Judging for the F "2k9" I can tell it's a Ford and the 2k9 means it's a 2009..... I have no true idea, but somebody should jump in within minutes of my post.
