The first car I ever owned was a 1971 Ford Maverick that was pale yellow from sitting in the sun for a few years. I bought it for $400 and everything I know how to do on a car I learned on that one. I had to part with it and ever since it's been my goal to buy another and start learning how to restore a classic car. I'd like some guidance on what would be a reasonable buying price for a maverick based on condition. It seems like most of the buying prices I've seen seem too high. Also, my future father-in-law (a die hard corvette fan) swears up and down the maverick is a death trap and I know there were a few recalls on the later models, but does anyone know why he would think that? Thanks! Sara
$400 is still a decent price for a project car. A decent running vehicle maybe $1500. We have the occasional meeting in Houston so swing by sometime and share some ideas!
Potential Buy I found what I think would be a great starter car (1970 6 cyl), but I haven't been able to get the guy to give me any solid info on the mechanics of the car other than it "runs and drives" which could mean anything. The car was primed before he got because "the guy didn't like the orgininal yellow paint", the side mirror is missing, and the interior looks average (front seats are transplants, back is not shown much but appears torn). I've asked the seller for the VIN and was ignored and also asked for some kind of maintance report or work done summary to which he said he had no information on that. All that being said, I have to wonder why on earth he decided to price the car at 2,775. There's no way I would pay that much on a car with the only promise being there's no rust on the body. There's a 750 delivery charge, and I was thinking of making an offer (including that charge) at 1,500 with the possibility of going as high (but no higher) as 1,950. Do you guys think that's a reasonable offer? Thank you!! Sara
Hi Sara...Welcome aboard neighbor! Well, almost neighbors...I work over here in Pascagoula, not too far away. The Maverick is no more of a death trap than any other car built in the 60's and 70's era. Any of the older cars like we have are not as "safe" to drive as a new car but you don't see that stopping any of us. Talk him into getting on here and see how many people are actually driving them and enjoying them. Depending on what you want to spend, I might be able to help you find a car. There are some over this way for sale.
Mine is a death trap, but I made it that way...way too fast with poor safety features. I consider my pink fuzzy dice to be "air bags"
Without seeing the car we are more in the dark than you are. Really need to see it or at least pictures to judge that.
