This brings a thought to mind I didn't put the original filter on. The machine shop did. I also dab oil on the seal of the filter before I install it. It's possiable the machine shop did not.

Strange trouble Greg, strange things happen no mater what! On time I was adding a quart of oil in our 78 Mustang II, this is when you needed a can open. While adding the oil, I put the can opener down on the fan shroud and forgot about it! When I started the car, it vibrated off and the fan shot it right through the radiator. Another time I was over a friends doing a oil change on my Maverick, he had a new driveway and asked me to be carfull. As you may know the oil filter is tricky to remove on a 302 with power stering but I did it a 100 times! The filter sliped through my hands and landed in the drain pan, oil splashed out everywhere! My buddy went bannasss! Oh well! At least there was no damage to your car. Joe
Been there done that one Greg. Will be cool to see you and your car again at the Roundup. The oil filter gasket can also stick on if some bruno puts it on too tight. I am one of those that only puts them on hand tight. I too fill the oil filter with oil before installation. Dan
I saw a post on another message board where a guy that worked for a Ford dealership did the same thing. It cost him his job. Also cost him the cost of the repairing the engine. He sent it out and the engine lost oil pressure, but the customer didn't notice it until it basically started making weird noises. It was too late. Be glad you caught it right away!
