Got in early today so I decided to brave the 100* heat today and get a little done on the car. I have had it on ramps a while so I could get underneath and put in the crossmember, headers, etc. Haven't even noticed untill today that some jerk cut the speedo cable instead of unplugging it from the tranny, augahhhhh. Something else I've got to take off the parts car and install. Then I was going to jack the car up and put the front end on jack stands so I could swap the steering linkages and do the disc brake swap. Now the floor jack decides it's too old and refuses to work, so I get out the bottle jack: too short, and if I put it on blocks, too tall to let down to the level of the jack stands. No problem, I'll just let it roll back off the ramps and push it back forward on the concrete pad. I have no brakes, so I get in the car and release the E brake, and a buddy gives it a little push. Down the ramps I go, and jerk the E brake to stop, it stops. Release the E brake, we get behind the car to push it the three feet back onto the pad, now it won't move! Damn rear brakes stuck when I jerked the E brake! Will not release! Go ahead and get the car on the stands, get the nuts off the tie rod and spindles, and my puller is too wide and slips off the tie rod and spindles. Calmly get up,say a few choice words, leaving tools laying, unplug fan, go in the house to the AC and say to heck with it for today! Try again tommorrow after a run to the parts store to get a new puller!
Yup,,, I have days like that too. I always tell myself if it was easy anyone could do it. I agree, to danged hot to mess with crap like that. Tomorrow is another day, maybe cooler?? I hope,, sure has been hot. Dan
we're 3 days shy of a record number of days in the 100's here in az. i gottta race in tucson tomorrow night. monday morning we're heading for the mountains.
Today went much better. Got out and got started about 7o while it was still cool. Went to the parts store and got a new set of pickle forks that will work with either a air hammer or a bfhammer. Got both sides off, found a bad upper ball joint on one side, others were fine. put it back together temporary untill I can get a ball joint. Took off the center link, and now I have room to install the starter. What a bi**ch that was! That top starter bolt is heck to get at, had to put the starter and the socket/extension up together to start the bolt, no hand room! Almost made me want a Chevy again, not! While I was down under, went ahead and retighted the motor stands and mount bolts. Crawled back out and got under the donor Comet for the manual center link. After a few unsuccessful tries to knock it loose with the pickle fork, gave in to the heat. Now I'm wet down to my skin with sweat, so I'm calling it a day. Now when I get a lower radatior hose, some heater hose, put the fuel pump in and finish plumbing that, and a little bit of wiring, maybe I can finally crank the beast! I've still got six weeks to get it driveable to make our annual local cruise in, so with a little luck, I might just make it!
