Is this a trim piece? My first guess was the 'rag joint"?

We'll let it run for a bit, and see if any of the long time Maverick guys know, If you've totally stripped a car from everything you might know :)

I know I have a factory floor shifter and the boot is definately leather but that would only be a few cars.

    Oil Seals

Chicago Rawhide CR Oil Seals are designed for the sealing of openings between a rotating and stationary component or between two components in relative motion. In simplest terms a seal is a barrier with four functions:

    1) Retaining lubricants or liquids
    2) Excluding contaminants
    3) Separating fluids
    4) Confining pressure
Many Chicago Rawhide CR seals have the patented Waveseal lip design that pumps lubricant back to the oil cavity while holding out contaminants, regardless of the direction of shaft rotation. The smooth molded lip is formed in a wave-like pattern that describes a wider path on the shaft to dissipate heat and reduce wear. Chicago Rawhide CR is the worlds leading supplier of fluid sealing devices for the truck, automotive, agricultural machinery, and machine tool industries.
Boretite coating contains rubberized OD bore sealant that fills small imperfections in the bore.
Molded smooth lip provides 20% less frictional torque (drag) with 25% to 35% less heat generation resulting in power savings and a reduction of the possibility of early failure.
Bi-rotational wave lip eliminates conventional wear tracks. There is little or no shaft grooving, and it pushes dirt away from the seal and pumps lube back toward the bearing.

Dalton Bearing Service is proud to offer a full line of Chicago Rawhide Oil Seals. This is a tough one. I should know but I can't think of it. I can't wait to find out the answer and see if I knew the answer and didn't remember or if I learn something new.
