I have a 8" factory posi with 3.55's. Does anyone know which car has the exact or shorter 9" diff that will bolt into my car. I have located a 58 tbird that is supposed to be 50" flange to flange. Is this diff going to work without modifications. I have a 9" out of a 57 fullsize car but it is too long. If I locate the 9" I need is anyone interested in a completely rebuilt 8" posi complete with housing and axles?

I wasn't aware that any 72 Comet ever came with a factory posi or 3.55 gears. :hmmm:
A 9" rear axle assy out of a Lincoln Versailles will fit...plus it has rear disc brakes.
I understand that a 57 Ford will fit...just not sure which one.

My car did not come factory with a posi, I just meant it is a factory Ford piece. It came out of a 67 stang. All 57 fords are about 2.5 inches wider. I believe around 52.5" flange to flange. If memory serves me right the mav/comet diff is 50.5"

The 57-59 Ford station wagon rears are a direct bolt in. (y)

Sweet. Thanks for your help. I just don't want to end up with my wheels sticking out past the fender wells.

The 57 full size rears are the narrowest 9" rears ever made.

They bolt right in, you just have to watch the backspace on the rims you use.

The wagon rears are same-same... wider than the original Mav/Com rear, but will bolt right in.

I guess the problem is that I already have my car all together. And to switch rims just doesn't seem practical. But I guess it may be necessary. I measured up a 9" from a 58 tbird the other day and it seemed like it was the same width as the mav/comet. Only problem is I don't have a jig to reweld the spring perches where they need to go.

The spring perches are in the correct position on the housings for the 57-59 ford wagons, if you can find one, and just bolt right in. (y)

Sean, if you do get the 9 inch, I would be interested in the 8.
