I'm gathering parts to swap my C4 to a T5 behind my '73 302. I bought and early flywheel, assuming it was 157 tooth. It turns out to be 160 tooth and has some damage to the teeth. What do I do? Can I flip or replace the ring gear? Use the damaged teeth? Or start over with 157 tooth flywheel?
Well it's a 160 tooth only if 4 tooth are broken off a 164 tooth flywheel. The wheels are different diameters ... you need the one that fits the bell housing you are using ...
It turns out I'm not hallucinating. Ford used 160 tooth flywheels on some early 60s V8s. I asked my ebay vender for an "early 28oz balance flywheel" and that's what he sent.
Either way if the teeth are ground up its no good.unless you know a shop that can swap a new ring gear onto it.You should get a fly wheel that will match your bell housing.289/302 bells use 157 tooth 351W and I think clevelands use 164 tooth and bell housings to match.Yuo can use a 164 on a 302 but as stated you will need a 164 tooth bell housing as the starter location is further out from center than a 157.A 164 tooth will allow you to use a bigger clutch than a 157.
Good info. Thaks. I'll check the bell, which came from the same vendor separately. I do have a machine shop that can change ring gears - if I can find one. Any further advice?
The ring gear should be available at parts houses - though I haven't checked. I bought a flywheel that cam with a ring gear from Ford the last time I needed one. I don't think Ford supports the older cars anymore but the 5.0 isn't that old yet.
I would like to see the casting #s on the back to see what yr that flywheel came off. I`ve seen c3 allready is it older
A 160 tooth flywheel would be correct for a 5 bolt bellhousing. Ain't gonna work with any 6 bolt bell. The only diameter wheel that fits a T5 bell is 157 tooth.
Thanks for the much-needed feedback. I'll get the flywheel swapped for a 157t unit. Then I'll start sorting out the pedal mystery.
