I think i might need a new power steering pump, and ive been using the search to try to find info on it, or what vehicles may have a fittin replacement etc

but all i find are articles about people rippin it out in order to lighten the car for racing..

does anyone like power steering or know which cars might have a swapable pump, maybe other same era fords?

I have power steering & I like it. I just replaced the pump about a year ago. Along with the hoses. Got it at the local Auto Parts Store. Didn't cost all that much....Less than a $100 for everything.....

Mikey just go to local parts store & buy a pulley puller. It was very easy. I just did mine & it was my 1st time. Went very smooth. Just follow the instructions for bleeding & flushing the system after new pump is installed. That's what I did. (y)

Or take it to shop and pay a few bucks for them to pull the pulley.

Or borrow the tool thru an auto parts store's "loan-a-tool" program.

I'm a fan of PS on the streets and no PS for strip.

I have one Maverick with (daily) and one without PS (strip)

I would want to put PS (or do everything within reason to keep it working) on my daily, on doubt.

What are they.....I just cleaned up my hoses and brackets and put hoses on and now I don't have any power.

I emptied the pump and put new fluid in, the hoses I know have air in them. took it up the road and it was if I had a manual steering.

You'll probably have to bleed out the system. While it's running, turn the wheels lock to lock a few times.Get the front end up off the ground.Leave the pump dipstick out(at first)Check the fluid, you should have to add some.Do this a few times till you get all the air out of it.When it starts filling up you might want to leave the stick in if you don't want fluid all over everything as it shoots out.I had to do this when I replaced the box AND pump on my '77 Ranger. Both were dry so it took a few times to get it all circulated throughout.I don't know if I done it "right",but it worked.

i like the power steering on the street. my other car is sometimes hard to steer going slow. course the spool and slicks probably don't help either. i'd fix it and keep it for the street.:)

advance and autozone has them. I ordered my there. was confused when I got mine, because my maverick was a 6cyl converted to a v8 and yes the hoses are completely different.

I love my power steering. When I was rebuilding my '72 I replaced all of the steering components except for the steering gear and added a Total Control Products coil over kit. I also tightened the preload on the gear a bit to take as much of the slop out of the system as possible. The car handles very well...Maverick power steering doesn't have to suck. :)
