Here's the deal: I cleaned and sealed the inside of the gas tank, blew out the steel gas lines, replaced the rubber gas lines, replaced both fuel filters, and replaced the fuel pump twice. I can pour a little gas in the carb and she fires right up and runs until that gas is burned up. Is there anyway to 'bench test' the fuel pump? If I manually pump the lever, should fuel come out? Because it doesn't. I even had my wife crank the engine and I held my finger over the intake side of the fuel pump and I couldn't feel a thing (I don't know if I would be able to). It seems as if the fuel pump is a lemon, again??? Any ideas sure would be appreciated. I almost forgot, it's a 200 L6.
Did you blow air back into the tank? The filter sock on the end of the pick-up tube might be clogged. If you blew the lines out with air then you might need to prime the pump. You can do this easily with a shop rag, an air compressor and the fuel line disconnected at the carburetor. Gently - very gently blow air into the gas tank while someone watches the line coming out of the pump. When fuel comes out then put the pump back on and connect the fuel line to the carb. Start it up and check the pressure. 6 to 9 psi is normal for a stock pump. I have had two Mavericks with plugged filter socks and blowing air back into the tank from the line that connects to the pump (inlet side) with the cap off clears up the problem with a loud POP! That filter laying in the bottom of the tank never hurt anything.
...i have had 2 sender tubes stopped up...had to pull the sender and wire clean them... as Paul suggested...blow from the pump inlet to tank (should hear bubbling sound in tank)...then...lightly from the tank to the inlet of carb.. ...:Handshake...
Oops, I forgot to mention that I replaced the pickup tube/sending unit with a new one at the same time I replaced the rest of the stuff. I will try to prime the pump like PaulS suggested. Thanks guys for the help...now, let's see if the beast will awake!
I had the same problem. I had a pin hole in my brand new fuel pump. You SHOULD be able the feel suction with your finger. You can also pull the pump and try to pump some gas with it manually to be sure it works.
