I thought I knew where all the good yards were around here. Got a tip on another, so went and checked it out. I passed out at the wheel Friday and wrecked one of my company vehicles, so the "boss" won't let me drive right now. So I talked my uncle into going with me... not hard since he has a 71 Mav and a 69 Stang. Anyway, we got there and were told to feel free to look around. The only rules were to close up any car you open up. We found about 10 64-73 Stangs, and maybe 4 early Cougars, but best was 6 Mavericks. The newest one being a 73. The other 5 were 69-72. 2 Grabbers... before you ask, the hood was toast on the 72, other was a 73. I got the spoiler and sport mirrors from the 72. I also got the dash ignition from the 69. There were a few clutch pedal sets out there also. I didn't get them... too much trouble to pull and it got late. No Z-bars or the like, they were I6 cars anyway. My uncle got his perfect hood too, that he has been looking for. His 71 flat hood is toast, so he has been needing another. Most hoods you find in the yards down here are junk. I found one car had bucket seats, but I forgot to see if the tracks were any good. The seats themselves are shot. The costs at the yard are not what you would call dirt cheap, but they are downright reasonable compared to eBay. 7 bux for the 69 ignition, 50 bux for the complete spoiler, and 25 bux for the mirror set. The ignition didn't have a key though. I'll have to rekey it. My uncle got a perfect 73 door (both bolt patterns, with sport mirror and glass still in it) for 75 bux, a 73 Grabber spoiler for 50 bux, and the hood for 25 bux. He also got some Stang parts that I could care less about. Dave
Oh, sorry... I'm fine. Not a scratch on me. I had a coughing fit and passed out from lack of oxygen. The trees stopped me nicely.
holy cow dude, what did you catch? hope you feel better congrats on the score btw. wish i had places like that near me. finding 80's cars is rare where im at
Excellent score. I hope you're better by now. Passing out is scary I bet, especially behind the wheel
DAMN!!!! Glad you were ok. Great score on the parts. If you go back, I could use a turn signal switch for a 69.5.
The guy was a little picky about how he sold stuff. He won't just sell anything off a column. You have to buy the whole column/wheel set. The 69 had a 3 on the tree... When I told him I wanted the ignition off the 69, he said he only sells whole columns. I had to explain to him the tray mounted situation. Then he was okay with selling it. I kinda like that he is that way... picky about how he sells stuff and how he expects you to leave the cars clean and closed after you are done. This leaves alot of parts viable for future customers. He doesn't even let you cut any wires. Everything must be removed at the nearest plug. If the car is totally wired, he won't even let you do that. He sells entire harness from headlight to tail lights for 50 bux. If the harness is unmolested, you must pay the 50 to get wire ends.
Wish the yards here had rules like that. All of them around here people just rip the s#!t out of cars to get to what they need. Numerous sets of door panels, and several package trays, including an LDO tray, have been victim to that in yards around here. Of course the cars only last about a month around here though before they crush them and bring in more. I usually just keep a close eye on their inventory and try to be one of the first to get to the cars before people have a chance to destroy good parts. That van looks like it'll buff out.
No, but I did see a very odd looking AM/8 track stereo. I didn't study it after I saw it was only AM, but it looked stock, like a Ford or Philco unit. The 8 track door said "Stereo" in big letters. The AM tuner portion was very short, so the end result was an 8 track that fit into a regular DIN opening. The stock Ford knobs were on the radio too, bolstering my thought that it was either factory stock, or dealer installed. No radio presets either, allowing the compact size.
My brother's '72 Grabber had something similar in it except it has FM also. The actual AM/FM dial is the door for the 8 track player. Don't think it was factory though, but it fits in the stock opening. The dial is blue and the rest of the face is chrome. Still works, I had it in my '69.5 for a while.
I dug up some on eBay... The first pic is of the radio I saw, except for 2 details that the second pic covers. The second pic has the knobs and the "Stereo" lettering on the door. If you picture those two items on the first pic, that is what I saw. It was a 70 Maverick. The radio fit perfectly in the bezel.
