Where is the best place to find a switched hot wire on the fuse box to run a new fuse panel off of? I want to add a 2 or 4 fuse panel for my electric fuel pump and cooling fan and maybe a stereo amp in the future. I don't want to overload anything already fused, hence the new panel....
Hey just an idea but have you thought of just running a hot lead to a swithed bus? Just find a terminal strip and a relay and a switch. Kind of a pain i guess to switch it on and off all the time but excellent theft deterent. Could also run the relay from a switched signal. Would be worried about overloading like you say. That is the reason for setting up a new bus.
I added an 8-position fuse block powered by a 10AWG wire to the battery. A relay energized by the stock radio power lead connects the battery wire to the fuse block.
something like my...crown vic...fuse box... you would need to...come off batt. to fuse block...to relay and switch on the relay... what Barry said
That's the info I was looking for. I don't need quite as much as you have, Frank, but that's the general idea of what I want. Using the radio lead is a good idea, bmcdaniel, that I hadn't thought of. Now I just need to find a relay, can get the fuse panel at the parts house, have looked at it before.
there are fuse holders that hold 6 fuses. i couldn't find one in a box. i think Earl put his in a box..(radio shack maybe) "electric fuel pump and cooling fan and maybe a stereo amp." these need to be ran off...relays... ...frank...
Depends what size you need. Radio Shack sells 30 amp automotive relays for about $5. I have a bag of them I bought mail order from MCM, $1 apiece for the relays and $1 or so for the prewired sockets to plug them into. If I need anything bigger I can get them at work. We build automotive wiring harnesses, among other things, and have 12 volt relays rated up to 75 amps.
I went to a pick n pull, checked under all kinda car hoods an found, got some nice fuse, relay holders! Saturn suv had a nice combo, Ford Vic also. Plus when I got home, found bunch of relays in my bucket! Owner is a drag racer also. They treat me fairly well! Give me break on loose stuff. I would keep hot wire live n fused to relay coming right off the battery, close to batt for the fan an pump, switched wire will energize the relay.
I was referring to the picture attached to post #5. There are a lot of amps running through that panel.
yep...that's why i have a 10 AWG wire (from batt.) and the...hot...from the...alt...feeding it... (that was the way it was wired in the CV...) ...:Handshake...
I hope you don't have all those circuits turned on at once.... a 10 gauge wire will burn before it gets that much current going through it. Think about using a 6 gauge wire to replace the 10 gauge wire.
(that was the way it was wired in the CV...) i used the same wires that it had to the box...10AWG does sound small... i will check the size tomorrow...it may be a ...6 AWG... ...:Handshake...
