so im gettin under the hood today to install electronic ignition, replace vaccum lines, rebuild my carb and who knows maybe some general tidying... however there are like 3 hoses coming off the stock air cleaner, one leading to the back right of the compartment to what i belive is some kinda pump havin to do with smog, one leading to the cap on the valve cover, and one coming down into some kinda tube id like to take care of gettin rid of any emissions stuff while im at it, so what all should i get rid of, and are any of those hoses attatched to the air cleaner still important?
The one going down to the big tube is for your heat riser for the carb. and the one in the valve cover is PVC....You should keep that...smog can..you can probably lose. Others might have a different idea. None of them really hurt to keep.
You live in CA, though...Most of us get rid off all but the PCV and vacuum advance, but in CA you might need to keep the smog stuff. Ask some CA car buddies with older cars what they are getting away with...
While the car will run and drive without that stuff, none of it really has anything to do with emissions. That can is a charcoal canister, which your gas tank vents to. It feeds the fumes from the gas tank into the air cleaner. The other two tubes are part of the PCV system, which unless your car is a dedicated race only car, you definitely want to keep the PCV system in place. The PCV, or positive crankcase ventilation system removes moisture and corrosive gases inside the crank case which are from combustion. Without it, sludge will build up in your engine. The best you can do there is replace the PCV valve if it hasn't been recently, and put a new filter inside the air cleaner where the tube comes in off the oil fill cap.
The tube to the charcoal canister is an emission device and should be maintained. It prevents fumes from escaping into the atmosphere.
