I'm trying to remove my tank...and I've hit a snag.

how does the "filler tube" remove from the rest of the tank? should i try prying it and then sealing it when i put it back on? i know a guy who welds, and the fumes will be gone by then, so sealing the tank back up won't be an issue.

my tanks is just rusted out REAL BAD and its sending garbage to my carb, which in turn is fouling my plugs.

    any suggestions?

    thanks!

The filler tube is only sealed with the rubber "O" ring. Loosen the floor seal around the filler neck, pull it up, and you will see it. Once the tank is disconnected, pull from the bottom and if possible, have someone push down on the tank, with a broom stick or equalivent, from the top, right around the O ring. It will pop right out with some effort. Dont smack yourself in the face with the tank when it comes loose. Have your friend under the car pulling while you push. It wont hurt you near as much.

I have found that it is extremely difficult (impossible in my case) to pull the tank off the filler tube from the bottom. I fought for probably 30 minutes with mine, said a few choice words, then put the tank back more or less in place, and the filler neck slipped right out pulling it from the top. Then I was able to drop the tank right out.

okay, great. thanks for the help guys!

i'm reluctant to use force unless i know its worked for someone else...i didn't know if there was a trick to it or anything.

i'll definatly have "my friend" under the tank ;)

    thanks a lot!

i had to go with m-matt's suggestion. i worked a little slickem' around the filler neck where it joins the tank. be careful with the rubber gasket in the tank. i don't know if the make a replacement. they get very hard.jmo...frank...:bananaman :bananaman

i did this for the first time yesterday actually.. removing the tank that is. all i did was doubled over an old floor mat and sat that on top of the lift point on my floor jack lifted the tank up to where it was before i took the straps off and pretty much just pulled on the neck from where it gets bolted to the back panel. popped right out. then i just lowered the tank down and rolled it out.
ps. if u do this make sure your tank is empty or u might have a fun mess when you pop a nice hole in the tank.

yeah, a few "colorful metaphors" were in order, but its popped right out there.

however, i did 'sucessfully' destroy the gasket...i'll need to find a new one of those. any suggestions on that front?

Yeah, I would like to know. I removed the tank on the Merc 1 and had to reuse the old o-ring.

Need to specify what O ring. From what I've seen, the filler neck on early mustang gas tanks use a rubber hose to connect it to the tank. If your talking about the O ring that seals the fuel sending unit, then the Mustang will work plus they are still available from Ford.
