The 28 oz wheels also have a counterweight, but unless you have one of each to compare, there's really no guarantee you can spot the 50 oz wheel at first glance. The counterweight is a different size between the 157 & 164 tooth wheels as well. looking at a 157 tooth 28 oz wheel and a 164 tooth 50 oz wheel and guessing which is what weight is a crap shoot.

Just to toss this info out there...mine has 164 teeth, and has AOD stamped into it. I know it is 50oz, because of the year and the 50oz balancer, but it is too large for my tranny.

yea,but the 28 oz has 2 small weights and the 50oz has one large weight, pretty easy to spot once you've seen 'em both. Not saying you're wrong, but the difference is pretty obvious.

With the C4 trans that is used in these cars, you must use 157 tooth wheel.
B&M offers a conversion wheel to use with an AOD on an early motor.
Pay attention to the balancer weight on the front damper as well, in relation to the motor and crank assembly being used.
Get any part wrong and instant vibration is the result.

AOD on a 28 oz motor, you just use a 164 tooth Pan fill C-4 flexplate.

    Flexplates

This seems to be more confusing everytime I research the subject.

    1. I have a 1986 van engine
    2. I have a C4 automatic (dipstick goes in case)

I need a correct flexplate and starter setup (that much I know). It seems that there should be a limited amount of choices. Is there some simple solution like if I have a 1986 Econoline van engine, I order a starter and flexplate for the same, and I should bolt to the C4 converter?

Here are a couple specific questions:

    1. I understand I need a 50 oz imbalance flexplate,
    a. does it have to be aligned with the harmonic balancer? How?
    b. Why are there different nuumbers of teeth? Which would I
    need?
    c. what starter would be needed to match the number of teeth?

    Thanks

Don't know if this helps, but when I had my balancing mis-hap bmcdaniesl offered up some helpful info....

You have to be sure of which crank you have, 28 oz and 50 oz have different counterweights. The crank, flywheel and damper have to all match. I just checked the casting numbers I gave you earlier. 2M & 2MA are 28 oz imbalance, 2MAE is the 50 oz imbalance crank

    Thanks again bmcdaniels(y)

THanks for the flywheel info. Now for the starter info? If I got a 157 tooth flywheel/flexplate, what starter can I use? I assume there is a 50/50 shot of getting it right either 157 tooth or 164 tooth.

BTW, sorry for kinda hi-jacking the thread.

    B & M 50239; 157 tooth, 50 oz., C4, Ford 5.0L, not SFI rated (no big deal), $119.95 Summit Racing price.

Call Texas Performance and see if they have it in stock.

Edit: FRPP shows one. M-6375-E302. Try Tommie Vaughn on this one.

    Hays: 12-040
TCI: 529610 (but it shows for a two piece rear main)
