well, my maverick hasn't been run in awhile due to a dead starter. It still has a small amount of gas in it from when I was still driving it around. I've been keeping an eye (or nose) on it for awhile and just today i noticed it's starting to smell just a bit stale. i would really like to avoid ending up with a tank full of lacquer. (It's happened before) I know I can get some kind of additive like the kind they use when cars are put in storage. So before I even head out to sprawlmart or auto zone, any suggestions?

yea stabil seems to be the best bet. usually its over with the boating stuff.

but a fuel stabilizer is what your looking for, stabil is just the brand name.

at this point though i'd probably just empty the tank. better safe then sorry. your car will probably run like crap untill you burn off all that old gas

Yeah. I'm starting to think that, too. The last car that this happened to me in I did burn out the bad gas and it was so obnoxious. I'm still going to grab some of that stabil stuff for next time just in case. So to clarify for my own benefit, if this happens again, or if i store the car in the future, etc and I don't want to empty the tank, if I put in the stabil ahead of time it will be ok?

yes, stabil is the way to go. Your fuel now is to far gone for the stabil to work, deffinetley want to drain it. It has been my experience lately if your not driving the car at least once a month, and putting some fresh fuel in, then the fuel will start to go bad. Quicker in the summer due to the heat. and just as bad in the winter considering moisture/condensation in the tank. just read the directions about quantity to fuel mix ratio.
I was doing small engine repair a few years ago and a customer added stabil to the gas tank, problem was 1/8 tank of fuel 7/8 tank stabil, big cleanup problem, the stabil actually gelled over the winter from not enough fuel.
