Borrowed an engine hoist today...any suggestions before I start to pull the old block

    I think I will just pull the block only leaving the tranny behind.

    Block has no oilpan, no heads or intake, etc. Just block and rotating assembly.

    Anything I should be prewarned about?

    First time pulling an engine. But I want to get that dripping thing out of my garage.

    Also, any suggestions on what to do with that block?

    I don't want it, but also don't want to just throw it away.

    Leave the hood on the car, just shove a broom handle or something of the like behind the shock tower to keep the hood as far back as it will go.

    Shy away from using the last (longest) setting for the boom on the cherry picker.
    (see "Dumb stories" thread for reasons)
    Always extend the legs of the picker as far out as they are meant to go, for stability.

    Radiator should be out of the car to prevent damage.

    On our cars, it is often easier to pull engine and tranny as a unit.
    I am not saying you must, or even should, but if you think about it, it is easier.
    It works best if you have a way to tilt the engine/tranny some so you can get the engine over the rad support, then grab the tailshaft of the tranny to hand guide it over while someone stabilizes (monitors) the cherry picker.

    All this keeps time under the car minimal and keeps you from worrying with hood alignment.

    The picker is set for the last hole right now, I definitely do not like the way it feels even without the engine on it. I was planning on pulling it in a bit. As much as I can without hitting my bumper.

    Radiator is out, heads are off, intake is off. I could "almost" pick it up by hand...yeah, right...

    Good suggestions. I am open for any more.

    And motor is free to a good home, otherwise it sits in the shop at work until someone comes by and steals it.

    I pull mine out without the tranny without any problems. Once you get the shock tower braces and headers out of the way, there's plenty of room. Also, I remove the hood. I use an a-frame and chain hoist, not an engine hoist - that changes things a little. I think you'll find separating the engine/tranny while in the car isn't all that difficult in Mavericks.

    Sure wish I was close by, I'd come pick the motor. :)

    Think I will pull the hood just for ease of reinstalling everything and adjusting everything afterwards. Just to save the hassle and my back.

    Might just drive it a while with the hood off so I can adjust the carb on the fly, and not have to mess with the hood everytime.

    One of these days, I will probably forget to put the hood pins in and the hood will fly up on me, so it is safer for the next few months to just leave it off.

    Scoop, take a sharp pointed screwdriver or punch and scribe around the hood hinges where they bolt up to the hood. that way, when you go to put it back on, all you have to do is align the scribe marks with the hinges and it all aligns back up....

    Use a wax crayon. It doesn't scar the metal.

    What they all said above! Double check your hoist legs on being extended out, more important then upper arm adjustment (thats important too, short block no worries on arm)

    Keep the old block till you get new one installed, never know what you left on it. Also, great to practice on with bearings, pistons, rings whatever else. When it gets in the way, scrap yard Did you ever pull your old bearings out??

    Never messed with the bearings. Maybe I will pull the rods and pistons in case I ever build that blower motor:dancing: they are 8:1 dished pistons...

    Might be a good experience. And I can see if I actually did any damage to the bearings. I will worry about getting this motor in and running before I mess with it, though.

    The hood has been off several times, and has marks already on it for side-to-side and forward-backward alignment.

    wiped out a cam lobe and lifter, and have since bought a "new" rebuilt +.040 block, converted it to roller, added a pretty good sized cam (see signature), and new heads. Should have it all together in the next week or so...

    Where you been man?

    Good talkin' to you earlier. I think I have my day lined out tomorrow. A neighbor saw the engine hoist in my truck when he came home and quickly came over. He has THREE Jeep rearends in the back of a small S10 pickup and needs my assistance getting them out and into his garage (somewhere in all that mess) sometime tomorrow, after I pull my old block out. I probably won't make the maverick cutup party. But feel free to send pics for me to post...

    Not saying you should do it but I cut my "radiator" support and don't have to raise my engine near as high.
