Hi guys. I've been checking this site out for a while now and I have to say it is full of great info. And boy am I gonna need it. Now I'm not to to performance vehicles, but it has been many years since I have messed with something that had a carb and leaf springs on it. My previous ride was a 2005 Mustang GT that ran a best of 10.48 sec a@ 131 mph with a stock 5 speed automatic. it too 2nd place in the 2006 NMRA king of the street competition, so I was vevry fond of that ride. Things came up and I had to get rid of it. Broke my heart and I still miss it. But I swore that the next ride would be built with cash and with no car payments attached. I just found a 1971 Maverick in really good condition. Surface rust only and a straight body. Naturally, it's going to need everything else replaced or rebuilt, but that's where you guys come in. I will be asking a ton of questions and asking for leads on parts I am going to need. I am attaching pics of my beloved 05 Mustang so you can see why I feel like I do and some pics of the new (to me anyway) maverick. I look forward to all the help and advice you guys can give. By the way... it's going to be a drag only car. No street driving.
Looks like the start of a great project. you can click on the camera icon under the posters name to see their car or go to the gallery to look at some more pics. Are you going to stick with a 302 based motor or go to the 351? i've got a 95 gt mustang also.
Well, they say there's no replacement for displacement, so I was thinking of a poked and stroked 351w. My basic plan for now is about 418c.i. running 12.5:1 compression. I run C-16 race fuel, so the extra compression won't be an issue. My goal is about 600 rwhp. One question... how strong are these 8" rears? If they are braced and 31 spline race axles in place with a spool, would they be good enough?
the 8" will probably last about 2 passes, give or take 1. For 600HP you definitely need to go 9". the 8 will take about 4-450 depending on who you ask.
Cool. Thanks for the info. Now I need to go to technical forum and ask some questions on which ones interchange... after I do a search first. Thanks again.
The only one that is a direct bolt in is a 1957 ford. Other than that any one can be cut to size. If you are going to tub it and narrow the rear, you'll have to do that anyway. Then it's a little easier to find one since the width really dosen't matter.
Your mustang is pretty cool the the maverick will be alot cooler!!! What type trans you plan on running?
