I completed my entire brake system overhaul. New master cylinder, 4 wheel cylinders, brake lines, brake hoses, hardware kits for all wheels and brake shoes for all wheels. I know the Mav has "self adjusting" brakes and from installing see how the adjuster may make a clicking sound. While the car was still jacked and with no wheel on it, I spun the drum back and forth and heard clicking in both directions. I am positive I put everything in right. Is this clicking normal?
you shouldnt hear any clicking.Check the edge of the drum for burrs/scale/rust.Did you replace the drums??? if not did you cut the groove off the edge of the drums friction surface???Could be a spring came loose or something is rolling around in the drum. They only energise when you step on the brake in reverse while in motion.(well thats how they are supposed to work anyways)Good luck.
Let me know what you find.Look for rub marks on the backing plate and drum where they meet,And just as an aside,if this is in the back what you may be hearing is the side gears in the diff meshing while in motion,if so no biggie, drive that baby!!
I am going back and forth with the drum, not one way. Bearing looks good, no wear. I packed and greased them. I will take another look and let you fellas know
Are your grease caps dented? Sometimes the cotter pin will hit the dented part and make a clicking sound.
did you change the drums or have them turned? Does the clicking happen once or twice every revolution of the drum? Did you put grease on the rub pads on the backing plates where the shoes rub on?
figured out Over the years the prior owner must have used a steel hammer to bang the cap on. It was not round and was dented. I used a thick and long cotter pin. I think the cotter pin was clicking against the cap. This weekend I will take the cap off and spin. If no noise I will use the same size pin and just snip it shorter with a new cap.
it could be the shoe not sitting in the right spot and rubbing on the side of the drum. i had that happen to me... you just need to take it all apart, and double check it all.. you might have a spring out of place... maybe the spring should go under instead of over.. etc.. and your guess of the cap could be as well..
