Jason, It's tough to even imagine what you have just been through. Sorry. There is a fairly solid-looking 77 Comet 2 door that is languishing at a seedy used car lot near me. The bad news is that it needs a roof because it had a vinyl top and got major rust under it. Then someone did some boogered-up repairs on it. The rest of it looks OK. If there was bondo anywhere else, it would have bubbled by now, judging by the bad work on the roof. If you want more details PM me.
Wow. When I saw the title of the thread and who it was by, I thought "surely not". I'm really sorry to hear about this. I like all Mavericks - 2 and 4 doors. I really liked your car, it was one of the best 4 doors I've seen. Atleast there are still a lot of useable parts to get you started on your next build. That combined with the insurance money will hopefully get you back where you were. If you're interested, I know where there are several big bumper 4 doors that could be bought for $350 each (if I remember right). If you're interested, PM me and I can get the info. What bulbs were you using?
when I was 15 my dad's 61 ford with a 390tbird engine, factory containal kit ,chrome skirts caught fire while we were traveling, we all got out and had to stand and watch it burn, horn shorted out and kept blowing, tires 1 by 1 blew out, I thought that car was going to be mine, I'll never forget that sad day, the smell, the helplessness, I feel for you and your daughter
Jason, I'm very sorry for your loss. That car gave alot of people a vision of what could be done to a 4 door. It is just a car, even though it hurts now, most importantly you and your family have your health and home. It sucks to start over, but sometimes it gives you a chance to do things a little differently if you wanted to. I for one will be watching for what you come up with next.
Sorry for your loss, that was the best 4 door I ever saw. There is a 73 2 door on tampa craigslist for $1500
Damn, I am sorry for your loss. Definitely the cleanest/most badass 4-door Mav I knew about. Hopefully you'll find another suitable car quickly. Best wishes to you and your daughter.
sincere loss a great loss..my heart goes out to you and daughter for the bad memory..will be interesting to hear how ins treats the matter..if my 51 merc and 67 cougar were destroyed,,many tears would fall..usually restored and projects in motion become part of familys.
Sorry to hear what happened. I hope you had it insured decently. if you had it covered for true value plus some.. you shouldnt have a hard time finding another car in the same condition. and keep the faith, you will find another and you and your daughter will have even more bonding time, you cannot put a price on that.
I'm sorry you lost the car and more importantly, the long hours of labor and love poured into the car. Be gald that you could move it out of the garage. My family watched our house burn in 1997 when my car caught fire and torched the house. Things are replaceable; lives are not. I am glad you were safe.
hawko, God was watching out for me. i had put the car in neutral to move it in the garage and simply forgot to put in back in gear. if it had been in gear we would have lost the house. i have some leads on a few cars already.still decideing what kind of car i want. i hope hagerty doesn't give me any hassles. opinion poll--- build another even badder 4 door or take all the go fast parts and build a 2 door?
she is still in shock over losing this one. she can't really even think about a replacement yet. to answer the bulb question-- i was using a typical halogen work light that you can get in any hardware store. i should have known better because the body on these lights gets very hot to the touch. almost like touching the bulb itself. well never again. too dangerous
When I read this story yesterday, Rocky happened to be off work then and was working on our car (and me at work) and knowing he uses one of those halogen work lights (I bought it for him!)!!! I called him immediately and relayed the story. He said he's always been leary of the intense heat they put out, but had no idea something like that could happen! And, today after work, he's heading out to buy us a few fire extinguishers for each vehicle and the garage. Scared the beejeebers out of us! So glad no one got physically hurt...emotions will heal eventually. Holly & Rocky
