mine is stock block with forged pistons on debeamed & shot peened rods, balanced, windage tray, Comp Cams Extreme Energy 274 cam, AFR 185's and makes over 400hp and 400ftlbs torque. Using 3:50 gears with a mild stall it runs 12.20's at 112mph in a full street car(stereo, subs, full interior,etc)..and is very very reliable. I have drive this car twice to Knotts Ford show(3000m RT twice) as well as a daily summer car(and to shows and/or races on Sundays) with no trouble whatsoever(eng is 8 years old now). I would vote for the stroker though(get the crites Headers unless you have a better idea)

I agree build your own headers. The satifaction of telling poeple you built your own if great. Plus you can make them do what ever you want. One of my tubes goes around the steering shaft very cool.

A stroker, Comp 305H, Performer RPM or worked cast heads, victor jr intake, 4000rmp 10" hughes converter, 3.73's or 4.11's if you don't drive on the freeway a lot. Forget fuel mileage, it'll run everyday on the street and be a good ride at the track. Just my 2 cents.

Here goes my idea. A 351 is a tight squeeze into a mav (hell a 302 requires a grease job and shoe horn ) if you leave stock manifolds on it for clearance go mild shoot for 400-450hp around 5500-6000 rpm max gonna require at least a 180 cc head you wont get much above that with manifolds.
Second option if trimming the shock towers for headers go 450-500ish with the same heads ands a bit more cam (max 6500rpm) you wont have a problem with torque and around town driving, Shoot for a 220-235ish adv duration cam the windor sr heads and a performer rpm and 750 carb light convertor (say 2500-3000 max) should run mid 12's be rumpy sounding without being a beast if you plan on driving it daily shoot for the 220adv cams thats my 2 cents worth

yeah, im thinking a nice stroker that i can beat around the streets in. i think im going to put my extra 5.0/AOD in for now untill i can build the 351 the way i want to. as for heads, ill just buy good heads to begin with ;)

I have never seen a 351W in a Mav with manifolds. Not saying that there aren't any, but when I did mine, I thought I pretty much exhausted (OK ... pun intended...) all the manifold options. None would fit, direct interference with the upper A-arms.

I mean to tell you that the guys at the local Mustang resto shop grew tired of me digging through their junk piles. I looked at every SBF in the salvage yards, cars and trucks. If there is a manifold option out there, I'd like to hear about it.

My headers are from a friend's 68 289 Cougar (unknown brand) and we chopped an inch out of each pipe and rewelded them. The exit on two driver side pipes is very tight, almost straight back. Had to be dinged to clear the steering box arm too.

If you are serious about getting a 351 in there, be very sure you have the exhaust worked out. I waited 12 weeks for custom swap headers that never did get made before deciding to tackle that myself.

All that being said, the 351 has so much torque, and the car is so light, that traction will be an issue. Don't be shy about building more power in the higher RPM ranges if it means taking a bit away from the bottom end grunt. You'll still have enough ... :thumbs2:
