does it ever start to back up and flow down the back of your tail panel? i would think there's something clogging it up but it doesnt seem to happen all the time so idk wats up. i always thought there was supposed to be some kind of baffle in the filler neck somewhere to prevent that from happening? im sure i cant be the only one suffering from this so any opinions are welcomed. it gets kinda annoying having to pump gas real slow so that it all makes it in the tank
Sounds like the tank vent is plugged/clogged. My 64 Falcon does that alot and of course it ends up down the back panels staining the paint if left alone. I deal with it at every fill up, then again in NJ your not allowed to pump your own gas. No well in hell I'm letting the $6 hr. guy spill gas on my car!!
Mine does it every time. I either keep the key on and watch the gauge, or guess how much I need based on how much the needle says I have left. Cannot get close to topping it off or it splashes back out on me.
Mine does it too. It is very annoying if you want to fill it up for mileage calculatioin. Mine also overflows if you pump it too fast.
Every Maverick I've ever had has not been a fast fueler.Turn the fuel handle up to about the 10 o'clock position for minimum spill, still have to take it slow though. As far as filling it up,just listen for that bubbly sound, you know the sound right before it barfs out on your shoes. When you hear it,stop
well this isnt an over flowing issue i could come pulling in on dead E and start pumping and within seconds its seems to be spilling. so where exactly is this vent tube at? im guessing somewhere that raquires dropping the tank?
Every Maverick (and Comet) I've ever owned has done that, you just have to go slow, and remember most were built to run on regular gas, and the nozzle used to be thicker, or at least they were here.
If you pull the nozzle out about half way and shoot the gas toward the top back of the tube, it won't splash back as much, at least on mine. But it still barfs when it is full.
Yep all of the MAvericks I had in the past and the two I have now did the same thing. Except back when I very first started driving and there were just a couple places you could still get leaded fuel, and like someone else said the leaded fuel pumps had much larger nozzle ends and fit better in the filler neck and didn't backup quite so much. But now it doesn't matter if it is on empty, if you pump too fast it will either cut off the pump or splash back on you depending on how sensitive the overflow switch in the nozzle is. I can pump it slow enough to get it completely full but it is a pain in the arse. Also whatever you do, don't think you can put the nozzlle in the hole and lock it in the on position and go no handed like you can on the cars built today. It might not get you the first time but I guarantee it won't take many times trying and that nozzle will flip out and pump gas all aver the ground (don't ask me how I know hahahaha) Actually I wasn't trying to pump no handed but the lock that locks the nozzle in the on position dropped down and set by mistake and when I let go I thought it was going to cut off and I reached to squeegy my rear window and the nozzle popped out and hit the ground running wide open throttle. Luckily I was right there and didn't get overly excited and it only pumped about $.25 cents worth on the ground.
all of mine have done this as well. seems like the later cars around 76-77 dont do it as bad because of the little baffle/flapper in the filler tube
I havn't filled mine since gas was like $1.02 gl. Maybe it has something to do with all the detergents and the cost to quantity ratio. I remember the fuel wasn't so bubbly.
Lousey vent set up,mine does it too, allways has,I have grown accustomed to pumping the gas slooooowww.It only splashes back if I fall asleep now.
