Everyone says all that is needed is the drag link and pitman arm. How do you get the water pump to turn. My water pump runs off of the power steering pump belt. 1975 mercury comet 302. Help!!
just tell the parts guy where you buy parts that you want a belt for a manual steering.....if he is like my local napa, it will take 3 or 4 times to get it right. Robert
You will need a pulley that lines your water pump up with the alternator, and then use a single belt to run from crank to alt to water. If you ask nicely, I might go out and get you the part numbers...
My water pump pulley has this stamped on it...CODE8509A and I bought it here...http://johnsmustang.com/search.php?search=8509&car=3 Belt says 7430 Gates 11A1090. This was O'Reilly, I think. I still had to put a washer on all four studs behind the pulley to get it to line up perfectly.
I've got three extra 70's waterpump pulleys that should work to replace the P/S stuff. Got two extra crank pulleys too. The pulleys from the 70's 351's (both Windsor and Cleveland work on the 302's too)
You can actually get a kit that converts the power steering control valve to a solid unit instead of changing the whole drag link. I know this because I have done this on my car and it was the best thing yet that I have done for the handling of the car.
The right way to do your pulleys is to get a non-PS single groove crank and water pump pulley set. You can however, mix and match pulleys, then shim them to-and-fro till some of the grooves line up. It's just not the right way.
I would like to use a single pulley on the crank, if I had access to one. I have the original 3-groove on there and it is big and ugly, and not being used.
Take the 3 groove off and look at how it's made. The one I used on mine had the inner groove stamped separately from the two outers. I put the whole thing on a lathe and machined the outer pulleys off. Out of three 351 pulleys I had this one was the only one made like that. The others have the outer groove pulley separate from the two inners.

There is no kit. Just remove the power setup from the motor, then the drag link/power ram from the steering linkage, plus the pitman arm. Then order the manual drag link and pitman arm from Autozone.com
Power Steering Kit Yes there is a kit! I know because I have one in my car right at this exact moment. I will get you the name of the place I bought it from as soon as I can. If you don't hear from me by the end of the week send me another message to remind me as I am extremely busy. P.s. The kit is a god send. All you have to do is remove the p.s. pump and disassemble the p.s. valve and install these solid pieces to take up the play on the ball. It works perfect.
Drives just fine. Isn't hard to steer at all. The only time it is, is at a dead stop. Once the car is rolling it's no harder to steer than anything else.
