Need help, just put in new points on my son's 71 Maverick Grabber and can not get it started. Just cranks and nothing. I pulled the wire out of the center of the distributor and put a spark plug in and if I did that right, there is no spark. any suggestions??

Make sure you didnt ground the points to the dist body.Check that little ground strap that attaches to em with one of the mount screws.Make sure its not touching anything other than the points. Also make sure the wire to the points is attached well.Start there,Check the gap as well and did you use a new condenser?

Checked the ground, it was pressed to the dist body. Lifted it up, so no contact. Still no spark.

Is your rotor sitting in the guide slot and all the way down?

I'll try a new condenser, I have the wire from the points hooked up to negative on the coil. I also check the rotor, it's in the slot and all the way down.

Once you have replaced the condenser, try carefully opening and closing the points with a flat blade screw driver to see if you are getting a small spark across the points. Another thing that can happen with your coil wire is that the dust boot can slide down the coil wire when it is pulled out and when you push the coil wire back into either the coil or the distributor cap the wire actually isn't going in far enough.

My 74 Maverick has what I called a reset button on left fender guard. I had to reset once when this happened. Motor would turn over but not fire. Does yours have a little red button on it.

Thanks everyone, got it running. Mavman72, you had it right! My new condenser must of been bad, replaced and it fired right up.
Now, I found the timing mark, but nothing to set it to, no marks. I turned the distributor by hand and sound. It seems a little fast idle, what's best slower rpm's or higher. Or is it a combination of adjusting the carb as well.\?

The timming marks on my 72 302 are on the Harmonic damper. If you can't find them(could be years of stuff hiding the marks) use a vacumm gauge. After the engine is warm up, set to highest reading and re-ajust the idel.
